Tigerettes persevere in win over Central Magnet

The sun was shining and the wind was breezy on Thursday afternoon for the opening round game of District 12-AA Tournament at Reese Hambrick Field in Lewisburg as Murfreesboro Central Magnet and Marshall County faced off for the third time this season.

The Tigerettes jumped on Central Magnet early with a six-run outburst in the bottom of the first inning, then withstood a spring storm that forced the game to be suspended and to be resumed on Friday at Nolensville, where MCHS finished off a 10-0 five-inning, run-rule win.

Ellie Luce went 3-for-3 at the plate, droving in three runs and scoring three runs to lead the Tigerettes’ offense.

MCHS also got superb pitching from Taylor Pickle, who blanked the Lady Tigers while striking out one and walking one.

The Tigerettes had swept Central during the regular season and wasted little time in the bottom of the first inning as Demiyah Blackman led off with a base hit to center field.

Blackman stole second base, executing a perfect pop-up-slide.

This freshman is an athlete that the Tigerette blue crowd will get to appreciate for three more years.

Madison Hery grounded to second and the Tigers attempted to nail Blackman heading to third base, but her speed was too much and the Tigerettes had runners at the corners with no outs.

Hery then stole second and Ellie Luce singled to center, scoring Blackman.

Kaniyah Taylor drove a ball to center field that scored Hery and Luce for a 3-0 MCHS lead.

Jessa Lancaster singled to put two MCHS runners on and Pickle singled to load the bases with no outs before Jahna Meadows drove in Taylor with a sacrifice fly to make the score 4-0.

Courtney Lynch, pinch running for Lancaster, came home on a single by Abby McGehee and Reese Lentz, pinch running for Pickle, scored on a sacrifice fly by Tatum Garrett to extend the Tigerettes’ lead to 6-0.

As the clouds darkened and the wind increased, the Tigerettes scored again in the bottom of the second as Luce singled, stole second base, gained third on a Central error, and came home on a sacrifice fly by Lancaster.

Pickle was continuing to mow down the Central batters.

In the bottom of the third inning with the weather deteriorating and two outs, Blackman drew a walk and stole second base.

Hery singled and Blackman took third on the play.

Hery advance to second base on a wild pitch with Blackman staying at third base.

Both scored on a booming double to centerfield by Luce to make it 9-0.

With lightning creeping closer and rain beginning to fall, the game was halted and after a 30-minute delay it was decided to resume the game on Friday in Nolensville.

The Tigerettes retired to the building behind first base and the wind picked up, shaking the doors to the building.

Fast forward to Friday afternoon at five o’clock at Nolensville’s beautiful facility.

With two outs and Luce at second, Kaniyah Taylor singled Luce home to make the score 10-0.

Pickle picked up exactly where she left off, setting down Central with the help of a double play in the fourth inning and solid defense in the top of the fifth inning.

Asked if it was hard to begin a game after stopping the afternoon before Pickle said, “No, I just told myself to get back into the groove.”

Coach Taylor said after the suspension of the game, “We came out and hit the ball hard tonight.”

“We’ve got to get ready for Nolensville. The beat us 6-0 and 4-1 this season, although we did much better in the 4-1 game.”
