The Marshall County Tigers hosted the Nolensville Knights in Friday night’s regular season finale, looking to clinch the District 12-AA regular season title, but were stymied by turnovers as they fell to the Knights 50-42.

“It was one of those games where I thought neither team got comfortable,” MCHS coach Lavon King said. “I thought it was an ugly game, we turned the ball over way too much.”

With Community’s (17-7, 8-2) win over Murfreesboro Central Magnet, the two teams tied and Marshall County (14-6, 8-2) won a coin toss on Saturday and will be the number-one seed and await the winner of the four/five first-round game between Central Magnet (10-10, 5-5) and Giles County (3-12, 3-7).

The Vikings will host the winner of the three/six game that pits Nolensville (13-9, 6-4) versus Forrest (2-18, 0-10).

Devonte Davis led the Tigers in the scoring column Friday night with 11 points, Omarion Alred and Jayden Hurt had eight points apiece, Bryson Hughes netted seven, Kaamil Hazel six, and Jaamil Hazel added a deuce.

The Tigers controlled the tip and Alred completed an old fashion three-point play to put the Tigers on the board first.

A Davis bucket for the Tigers was sandwiched in between a nine-point run by the Knights and MCHS trailed 10-5 with one minute left in the first quarter.

Nolensville’s Ashton Smith and Kaamil Hazel swapped 3-pointers and when the horn sounded to end the first quarter, MCHS trailed 13-8.

The second quarter saw the Tigers fight back as the Hazel brothers, Jaamil and Kaamil contributed baskets along with a Hart layup and a deep three-pointer from the corner by Bryson Hughes, but MCHS could not cut the five-point lead as Nolensville led 22-17 at the half.

The Tigers were plagued by fouls and the Knights converted 4-of-6 from the free throw line in the second quarter.

The third quarter saw both teams heat up after the halftime adjustments by both coaches.

MCHS was led by Davis and Hart with four points apiece and Hughes sank another three, but the Tigers could not cut into the halftime difference.

Nolensville’s Riley Byron scored five points that helped the Knights increase their lead to 11 at 39-28 in the third period.

The fourth quarter saw the Tigers vainly fighting back, but an 11-point lead is hard to overcome as MCHS seemingly saw their chance for a district title disappear when the horn sounded for the end of the game as Nolensville completed the Friday night sweep.

“Hopefully after watching film Monday we can learn from our mistakes,” King said. “We will have a bye for the first-round games and will play next Friday night.”
