MMC’s early barrage sinks Matthews
First place Marshall Medical Center took on winless Matthews Team Sports in the Tuesday night Babe Ruth opener and came away with an 11-3 five inning, run-rule win.
Logan Courtamanche and Blake Aldridge teamed up on the mound for MMC as Courtamanche picked up the win, tossing all three’s in the stat column.
Courtamanche pitched three innings, gave up three hits, three earned runs, struck out three and walked three.
Aldridge tossed two innings of hitless ball, striking out five and walking three Matthews’ batters.
Aldridge also had a double, a triple and a walk in three at bats and scored twice in the contest.
Zack Graves went a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate for MMC with 3RBI, two runs scored and one base on balls.
Cason Warner led off the game for Matthews with a double, but was gunned down by MMC catcher Austin Grubbs trying to steal third base.
MMC went right to work in the bottom of the first on offense as Aldridge led off with a triple, but was out at home trying to score.
Colton Barber restarted the attack with a walk and Graves followed with a single before Grubbs sent Barber home with an RBI single.
Courtamanche sent a single to right field to score two more as MMC took a 3-0 lead.
Matthews did not score in the top of the second inning and in the bottom of the frame, MMC blew the game wide open as they batted eleven players and scored six runs off Matthews starting pitcher Brayden Bowyer.
Bowyer’s wildness in the frame hurt him as he walked four in the inning and they all scored.
Graves served up the big blow with a two-run triple for MMC, who took a big 9-0 lead.
The depleted Matthews’ squad did not give up, responding with three runs in the top of the third inning as Bowyer drove home two runs with a bases loaded double and Luke Terry scored on the front end of a double play.
Aldridge scored on a Grubbs’ fielder’s choice RBI in the third inning and MMC scored its final run when Connor McVey reached on an error to leadoff the fourth and eventually came home to score on a passed ball, making it 11-3.
With one out in the top of the fifth, Bowyer and Matthew Fuller drew back-to-back walks before Aldridge struck out the next two batters to end the game to move to 5-1 on the season.
MMC picked up a forfeit win over Nichirin on Wednesday to match the Elks at 6-1.
