Lady Rockets blank West Morgan
Following an early morning one-run loss to 7A Buckhorn, (AL) the Forrest Lady Rockets were looking to improve on a few key areas from the previous contest as they drew another team from the Yellowhammer State in West Morgan High School from Trinity.
One of the areas was in the batter’s box as Forrest totaled just three hits against Buckhorn and the other was fielding mishaps as three errors allowed three early runs against the Lady Bucks.
The result had to be an overwhelming success as the Lady Rockets finished with 10 hits in just four innings and played a mistake free ballgame on defense by not committing an error in a dominating 8-0 win over the Lady Rebels.
"I was pleased," Forrest coach Becky Cheatham stated. "I wish we had the same focus the first game but that's in the past. As bad as I hate to lose, and I think you know how I hate to lose, sometimes it's good for you."
"You realize that you’re not all-that and we're not all-that yet," Cheatham added. "We're here to improve and I think we did that a little bit today."
Forrest picked up another great pitching performance from an underclassman as Ashley Milligan pitched a two-hit shutout in four innings that included five strikeouts.
"We all worked good together out there," Milligan said. "I feel like if I would have let some pitches go the field would have backed me up."
The offense definitely backed the young pitcher up, as four different players picked up an RBI and Anna Blanton, Carson Warner, and Jasmine Runk all added two hits each.
Kaitlin Leverette led both teams with two runs batted in and two quality at-bats while Milligan helped herself at the plate with two quality at-bats.
"We had a delay this morning and I just think that really put us off and we got into our own heads too much," Forrest senior Carson Warner, who finished with a single and a double, explained. "Our second game we were way better and we were prepared."
Warner was the only lone Lady Rocket to gain a hit in the opening inning with a single to center field, but Forrest really started working on West Morgan pitcher Hannah Mattingly in the second inning.
Runk started off the inning with a single to right before Milligan laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to move the senior to second base.
Karley Daughrity continued her monster day at the plate with an RBI triple before Anna Blanton stepped up and launched an RBI single to right field to score Daughrity and push the score to 2-0.
Zoe Long added the third hit in a row with an infield single and Leverette sent home the third run of the inning with an RBI single deep into center.
The fourth run of the inning was scored when a quick thinking Long snuck behind an inattentive Mattingly's back before time was called.
The fifth and final run of the inning crossed the plate when Warner reached first on a pitcher’s error that sent Leverette home to give the Lady Rockets a 5-0 lead after two innings.
The Rebels threatened in the bottom of the second when Claire Reeves sent a bomb to the right field fence, but Blanton came up throwing and caught Reeves getting greedy going for the triple.
West Morgan switched to Karly Terry on the mound in the third inning and the switch offered a slight reprieve as the Lady Rockets went hitless in the inning, but after Milligan struck out three batters in the bottom of the inning, Forrest was able to tack on three more runs to close the game on a positive note.
"We definitely need to work on mental errors and mental mistakes and just keeping our heads in the game," Warner said. "But overall, I think we did a great job hitting this game."
