MMC beats Elks, claims Babe Ruth crown
Marshall Medical Center claimed another Babe Ruth League title Tuesday night with a solid 6-4 win over its archrival Elks.
The dynamic mound duo of Zack Graves and Logan Courtemanche did it again for MMC (7-1) with Graves starting the game and pitching three innings before being relieved by Courtemanche in a tie game.
Courtemanche came on and tossed three innings of one-hit baseball to pick up the win before the pair got some seventh inning help from Ashton Grubbs, who earned the save.
Carson Cheek had an outstanding outing on the hill for the Elks as he went the distance, giving up six runs (four earned) on six hits, while striking out 15, and walking five MMC batters.
MMC scored a pair of runs in the first inning as Caleb Grooms walked to leadoff the game and stole second base.
After Cheek recorded a strikeout, Graves walked and Grooms scampered to third on a pitch in the dirt.
Courtemanche followed with an RBI fielder’s choice and Graves scampered home moments later on a wild pitch.
The Elks responded quickly, plating three runs in the home half of the first inning as Javarria Rucker drew a base on balls and Cheek and Kel Greer followed with back-to-back triples to tie the game at 2-2.
Greer scored on a Graves wild pitch to make it 3-2 and both squads went down 1-2-3 in the second inning.
In the top of the third inning, Brock Roland walked to leadoff the frame and was stranded there with two outs until he came around to score on an Elks error to knot the game at 3.
Graves set down the Elks 1-2-3 in his last inning of work and both Cheek and Courtemanche struck out the side in order looking in the fourth inning.
Roland drew another leadoff walk in the top of the fifth inning and Grooms followed with a base hit up the middle.
Connor McVey moved the runners up to second and third with a groundout before Graves lashed a two-run single to left field to make it 5-3.
Courtemanche came up with a base hit and Graves came around to score on a throwing error after Courtemanche’s single.
In the bottom of the inning, Courtemanche struck out the side looking for the second frame in a row.
Cheek tossed a 1-2-3 top of the sixth and Javarria Rucker doubled and scored on two throwing errors to lead off the home half for the Elks.
Courtemanche got out of the inning and MMC had a runner thrown out at home in the top of the seventh inning.
Grubbs came on for Courtemanche in the bottom of the seventh and got a groundout before Micah Riddle beat out an infield single.
Grubbs got the second out on a pop-up to the shortstop and MMC clinched the title when third baseman Hayden Lykins squeezed another pop-up.
