Mikey Stoddard started attending football camps and eventually attended a camp to Carson-Newman.
After that camp in Jefferson City, he had a pretty good idea of where he wanted to attend college.
Signing a letter of intent to continue his football career was just the icing on the cake.
Earlier this spring, the Forrest Rocket graduate signed his letter of intent to continue his football career at Carson-Newman University.
In front of a crowd of his teammates, family, coaches and friends, he made it official and put his pen to paper.
“It’s so exciting. I can’t believe it. It’s still surreal for me. It’s amazing having all the support behind me,” Stoddard said.
Stoddard, who got his start in elementary school, put in the work and became a mainstay in the Forrest Rocket trenches.
“I’ve probably been playing since I was in second or third grade, playing mostly offensive line,” he said.
The plan is to continue playing on the line in college as well.
One of Stoddard’s favorite things about playing football in Chapel Hill has been playing with the same group of guys for the better part of the last decade.
“I think just being able to play with all the same guys from pee wee all the way up through high school. It’s been the best part,” he said.
When it came time to put himself on the radar of prospective colleges, the plan was to attend camps and try to stand out.
Eventually, the staff at Carson-Newman saw Stoddard and the rest is history.
“Initially, I started going to football camps just in the local area. Eventually, I caught their eye and we just started communicating back and forth. It was super nice. Before that, I had gone to their summer football camp and that’s when I realized that was a really cool place,” he said.
While he’s still several weeks from arriving on campus in Jefferson City, Stoddard has been working out on his own in order to prepare for his freshman season.
He plans on pursuing a degree in nursing.
Carson-Newman University is a Division II NCAA school located in Johnson City, competing in the South Atlantic Conference.
