Well, since my column on the shelf life of outrage we’ve seen two congressmen and a senator go down in flames. The most bizarre involved now-former Congressman Trent Franks of Arizona who had discussions with female staffers about surrogacy. At least one of the staffers took it as a proposition for sex. Franks denied that charge but resigned anyway... more
With every passing year, Pearl Harbor Day leaves us with a stark reminder that the number of WWII veterans is dwindling rapidly. The epic struggle against forces of undisputed evil, fought by the fathers and grandfathers, mothers and grandmothers of so many of us, may soon be relegated to the annals of American history, yet no military conflict since the Civil War has had a more dramatic impact on who we are as a nation... more
I finally get why President Trump tweets. Even though I often disagree with what he tweets and how he tweets it, the president has no choice. Tweeting is how he controls, or steers, the media coverage of him and his administration - by setting news agendas for them, whether they like it or not... more

The first three words of the U.S. Constitution are, “We the People.” The Constitution itself, our institutions of government, the democratic process — all were established to give Americans a voice in their own governance. We are still striving to make that vision real for all, but we are closer than ever... more
Hey, did you know that President Donald Trump can’t be found guilty of obstruction of justice? Yeah, me neither. Thank goodness that White House lawyer John Dowd came along to clear that up for us all, and, in the process, rip a hole in the time-space continuum, dropping us into some parallel universe where we’re actually ruled by Mad King Donald, and not a democratically elected executive who’s subject to the same set of laws as the rest of us... more
It’s a dreaded holiday tradition. Couples who are expecting a child (or trying to conceive) receive unsolicited naming ideas (some casually suggested, some “suggested” with intense pressure) at family gatherings. (Scholars claim the name “Adam” means “man of the earth.” I suspect God INTENDED it to mean “Thank Me there are no grandpas to be devastated – devastated! – if he’s not named for THEM.”)... more
Last year, I expressed serious reservations about the proposed AT&T-Time Warner merger. I argued, at the time, that allowing this merger will have important implications for a free press and American democracy for many years to come. I reasoned that by approving the merger, more media concentration would follow and the liberal media would gain an even bigger foothold on what Americans see and hear on television... more
SAN FRANCISCO - Too often in America we are reactive rather than proactive in addressing the nation’s problems. With each bit of breaking news it seems that calm, considered debate is replaced by a flood of tweets and a wave of emotions. So it is with the case of Jose Ines Garcia Zarate, the undocumented immigrant acquitted here of murder and involuntary manslaughter in the 2015 shooting death of Kate Steinle... more
Ah, the giving season is upon us - the best time of the year to be an American. According to Giving USA 2017: The Annual Report on Philanthropy for the Year 2016, American giving rose to $390 billion last year - a 3 percent increase over the prior year... more
As Congress struggles to enact legislation that will bring tax relief to the rich and obliterate healthcare for the not-so-rich, another battle is brewing beneath the Swamp; the never-ending struggle to decimate the lusterless policies that affect the lives of ordinary Americans. Policies put in place to protect us no matter what our political persuasion may be... more
It’s beginning to look a lot like debt collectors, everywhere you go… According to the NerdWallet personal finance website, a distressing number of shoppers are still paying off credit card bills from last Christmas. NerdWallet’s survey shows that 24 percent of Millennials, 16 percent of Generation X and eight percent of Baby Boomers are still trying to recover from the doorbusters, layaway treasures and stocking stuffers of 2016 -- and avoid LIVING IN A SNOWPLOW DOWN BY THE RIVER... more
Seems like every time we turn around they’re adding a new letter to LGBTQ. PJMedia recently ran a story about “Inclusiveness Training” for teachers at a Canadian school district. The aim was to teach teachers to be more tolerant of “LGGBDTTTIQQAAPP” students. I’m not kidding... more
The Thanksgiving season is often a time of reflection, gratitude or opportunities to provide meals to those in need. But, have you thought about giving the gift of life? I would like to encourage you to do just that by registering as an organ and tissue donor. Not only is it the right thing to do, it is simple, and I challenge The Volunteer State to take just a minute and register... more
Ring, ring. “Hello, this is Tom.” “Hi, Tom, I called to thank you.” “Thank me?” “Do you remember the data breach at the credit-rating agency Equifax last summer? You were among the 143 million people whose personal data were compromised.” “I was?” “That’s right. I gained access to your Social Security number, driver’s license number and credit card accounts.”... more
It’s now an almost daily occurrence. Someone comes forward saying they were groped, grabbed, or otherwise wronged by somebody famous. How long should we credibly be asked to believe that someone was wronged? In other words, what is the shelf life of outrage?... more
The Roy Moore controversy should be time for all of us to do a little soul searching. Whether it’s Bill Clinton or Roy Moore, guilt seems to be related to political affiliation. Remember all of those Democrats rallying at the White House during Clinton’s impeachment? Al Gore claimed his boss would go down in history as one of our greatest presidents... more
Driving out of town on Albany Avenue I was struck by the speed with which neighborhoods shifted before my eyes, from the handsomely rebuilt downtown to some of the saddest poverty in urban America. And then, just as quickly, I turned onto Bloomfield Avenue and was staring at lush fairways lining the Hartford Country Club... more
Will someone please throw an ocean of ice water on the Pelosi-Schumer-MSM axis of evil? Their ecstasy over the results in Virginia’s election returns Tuesday night shows how desperate the Democrats are for any sign of hope that their party is not already dead... more
Heading into Tuesday night’s gubernatorial election in Virginia, national Democrats badly needed a win. After dropping some serious coin in special elections in Georgia and elsewhere, the party faced some legitimate questions about whether their brand, in the age of Donald Trump, was now past its sell-by date... more
