From Washington, D.C. to the NFL and Hollywood, America’s idols are tumbling down. This is not a bad thing. For too long, we have wasted precious time and money worshipping these so-called “social justice” warrior hypocrites who continue to disappoint... more
Today I’m counting my blessings. My wife Colleen, my daughter Ashley and I are huge country & western fans. We go to lots of outdoor concerts and Country Music Association awards shows. In fact, we were planning to attend the Route 91 Harvest Festival concert on Sunday night and stay at the spectacular Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas... more
Did you realize that October 31 marks 500 years since Martin Luther presented his famous “95 theses” about abuses by the Roman Catholic Church? (October 31, 1517 was also the day Luther declared, “Salvation comes not by works, but by faith… faith there’s a special circle of hell for the purveyors of pumpkin spice products.”)... more
President Trump’s latest feud with outgoing Senator Bob Corker is emblematic of the power struggle that’s going on in the Republican Party today. Corker represents the RINO wing—Republicans in Name Only—while Trump represents the drain-the-swamp wing... more
What happened last weekend in Las Vegas is not, in the strictest sense, a Second Amendment issue. It is symptomatic of something deeper. There is little doubt that if more restrictive laws were in place to limit the sale of certain types of weapons, as well as devices that increase their lethality, the terror unleashed may have been less devastating... more

Since Playboy founder Hugh Hefner’s recent death, a variety of voices have been calling him everything from a cultural icon and innovator to, according to New York Times columnist Ross Douthat, “wicked,” a “chauvinist” and “a pornographer.” “Hef the vanquisher of puritanism, Hef the political progressive, Hef the great businessman and all the rest,” writes Douthat. ... more
I have witnessed my 13-year-old son Gideon wrestle with his unwieldy school backpack often enough to nod knowingly when I encountered the NBC News story “Why Bags Are Wrecking Our Backs.” Although much of the online report does focus on youngsters and their hefty textbooks, adults face life-changing dangers as well. And it’s not just backpacks; poorly designed or overly stuffed purses, briefcases, tote bags and wallets can all contribute to back pain and related ailments... more
The shooting in Las Vegas was on a scale of unspeakable horror. Dozens killed. Hundreds wounded. Predictably, the left immediately launched into an issue they keep in their hip pocket. Gun control. It’s an understandably emotional response, but it doesn’t get to the heart of the problem... more
“When was the last time you did something for the first time?” When I heard Darius Rucker’s invitation to spontaneity on my car radio, I immediately knew I had a topic for this week’s column. The catchy song (on Rucker’s new album, due October 20) does not demand a total makeover, a perpetual bachelorette party or a formal Bucket List; but it does point out how people can get in a rut and forget how to grow or have fun... more
Because they harbor criminal aliens, sanctuary cities and the debate that surrounds them confound immigration law enforcement advocates. The dispute often centers on philosophical questions like how to define the term, and whether state and local governments have the authority to establish federal immigration policy. ... more
“It’s everywhere you turn these days. I can’t take it anymore.” “Ah, yes, you speak of a regrettable fact of modern life - that politics is in our face everywhere we go, even in professional sports.” “Professional sports always provided a respite from the worries of the real world. It was the one area where I could always escape the stress and strain of politics, which has gotten pretty ugly in recent years.”... more
Every time NFL players take a knee during the national anthem, they pierce the hearts of patriotic Americans and military families, including mine. I absolutely love football and my Dallas Cowboys. No longer. I haven’t burned my Cowboys sweatshirt yet, but I am close, which would make my husband happy because he’s a Redskins fan. But, if mine goes, his goes, too... more
You’re putting your life at risk, one like at a time Facebook’s fairly recent slog into transparency reveals some rather nasty big-brother surveillance of their users. It’s always been a given that a service provider who does not directly charge customers can only pay the bills and employees if they’re being subsidized, either by the government, advertising or leasing access to their clients’ information... more
Help me, O LORD my God: O save me according to Your mercy: Psalm 109:26 In this psalm, David finds himself in great distress and cries out to be saved. In his cry he uses the word “help.” The word help is a small word with great meaning, but it means little to those who are not in distress. Distress takes many forms and it can vary within the different seasons of one’s life. This small word “help” is a wonderful expression in the time of need... more
When I first decided to write about the NFL/National Anthem issue it was before President Trump got involved with his opinion. Now, according to the left-wing media, it’s all his fault. He’s also been accused of making this a racial issue. It was Colin Kaepernick who made this a racial issue. Remember, he first sat for the National Anthem because he refused to stand “to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color.”... more
Last November, Californians for Population Stabilization joined a federal lawsuit filed by the Washington, D.C.-based Immigration Reform Law Institute (IRLI) against the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for their failures to comply with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA)... more
I can’t blame them, really. It’s human nature to want something for nothing. I speak of two tenants who recently moved into a rental unit I own. I made the mistake of renting the unit for one flat rate that included “free” utilities. Since the tenants didn’t have to pay directly for their electricity usage, they cranked the air conditioner day and night. There was no incentive for them to turn it off when they were at work during the day or away for the weekend... more
Sports talk used to be so easy. Guys named Mickey, Hank and Barry hit the long balls. Joe, Brett and Tom tossed the touchdowns. But now, “That guy on the Marlins who’s hitting all the homers, what’s his name? Giovanni something?” With enormous patience my son explains for the tenth time, “You mean Giancarlo Stanton.”... more
Two essays this week, by two very different authors, take us deep into the tribalism that marks our politics. Both should serve as a wake-up call for what we risk losing as a culture - as a nation - if we fail to reconcile our differences and heal long-festering national wounds... more
