Coming from a town of just over 1,200 residents with a high school enrollment of just over 300 students and playing for the 61st smallest classified baseball team out of 335 programs, having a player sign to play college baseball should be an enormous feat.
But for the second time in just over five years the proud Cornersville Bulldog baseball program has seen its second pitcher not just join a major Division I baseball squad, but emerge as a heavy contributor.

During the recruiting process, most coaches assure the potential recruit the opportunity to get big minutes during the players' inaugural season.
In the case of former Forrest soccer star Brynn Colvin, that is exactly what happened.
Colvin, who started playing with varsity as an eighth-grader and went on to set the single game scoring record against Fayetteville with seven goals before finishing with a whopping 57 career goals and 23 assists from the striker position has already become a key member of the University of Alabama in Huntsville soccer team.

When the name Forrest Lady Rockets is mentioned around the Mid-State, the first thing that comes to mind is the rural school's powerhouse softball program.
But the hardwood product is not too shabby either.
Longtime Rocket fans will remember the 1995 team that sent the entire starting five off the college on athletic scholarships, including Reagan Housch, who set 3-point shooting records at Columbus State or 2001 graduate Jessica Ezell, who started as a freshman on an Austin Peay squad that went to the NCAA tournament and later finished at Martin Methodist College.

ATLANTA (AP) — To add another championship to the greatest dynasty college football has ever seen, Alabama turned to its quarterback of the future, and Tua Tagovailoa proved that his time is now.
The freshman quarterback, who had played mostly mop-up duty this season, came off the bench to spark a comeback and threw a 41-yard touchdown to DeVonta Smith that gave No. 4 Alabama a 26-23 overtime victory against No. 3 Georgia on Monday night for the College Football Playoff national championship.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee delivered the last-minute plays it failed to make three days earlier.
The 21st-ranked Volunteers needed that kind of late production to avoid a second straight loss
Grant Williams scored a tiebreaking basket with 54 seconds left Wednesday night as Tennessee outlasted Furman 66-61 to snap the Paladins' five-game winning streak. Tennessee barely survived a game that featured 13 ties and 14 lead changes.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — Wofford coach Mike Young walked into his postgame news conference wearing a soaked dress shirt and sheepishly drying himself with a towel. "Pardon my appearance," Young said, "a little over-exuberance from my team." It's OK, coach. Beating fifth-ranked and reigning national champion North Carolina — on the road, no less — deserves a hearty celebration...

When an athlete heads off to college to start a new journey with a sport they have been playing for the better part of a lifetime, the first year is usually all about adjusting to a new environment and following an exact schedule.
Unfortunately many athletes never make the adjustment and never come back after the inaugural campaign but for those who do, the sophomore season is usually the one which they reap the rewards for taking a year to learn the system while little playing time.
That was exactly the case for former Marshall County soccer star Abbey Redferrin who played in just four games as a freshman for Freed Hardeman, but came back as a sophomore to play in all 18 games with the majority being starts.

One of the most difficult things for any high school graduate entering college is learning how to manage time.
For most of those students learning how to manage time efficiently for classes alone is a monumental task, but add attending one of the most prestigious military colleges in the world on top of playing football for one of the most successful teams in Division I (FCS level) over the past few years and you have the recipe for the kind of freshman year that would make most students buckle under pressure.

IRVING, Texas (Aug. 23, 2017) – As the season draws near, the month of August provides the perfect time for the National Football Foundation (NFF) & College Hall of Fame to highlight the key rule changes that will take effect during the 2017 college football season.
Since 2011, the NFF has partnered with Rogers Redding, the national coordinator of College Football Officiating (CFO), to help generate awareness for the rule changes in college football through a series of regular columns distributed by the NFF. The CFO functions as the national professional organization for all football officials who work games at the collegiate level, and the organization held its annual winter meeting of conference coordinators for football officials in late January for the fifth consecutive year at the NFF headquarters in Irving, Texas.

The Chapel Hill native and rising sophomore at Vanderbilt University has capitalized on an opportunity to shine this summer, playing for the Keene Swamp Bats of the New England Collegiate Baseball League.
“It’s awesome,” Brewer said. “We’ve got a lot of good pitching here. That’s what will hopefully set me up for success my sophomore year….facing this good pitching and getting a lot of reps.”

For most people, teaching or coaching teenagers doesn't sound like the best way to spend a career. Former Middle Tennessee and Major League Baseball player Jason Maxwell couldn't imagine doing anything else, though.
After playing 12 years of professional baseball as a utility infielder, including stints with the Chicago Cubs and Minnesota Twins, Maxwell started chasing his real calling: teaching the game he loves to kids.
"I've known I've wanted to be a coach all my life," he said. "I've had a lot of great role models, from high school to college with Coach [Steve] Peterson and Jim McGuire. Those guys took time out of their lives to invest in me, and I always felt it was right that I invest in other kids and give back."
