Posted 7/9/13

The Marshall County Cal Ripken 6U all-stars played ball for 'Team Brandon' as they hosted the state tournament at the Richard Cashion Sports Complex in Lewisburg last weekend, but their gallant fight on the diamond ended in a third round loss.

Wearing orange shoelaces for their 17-year old cancer stricken hero Brandon "BB" Bradley from Cornersville, the MCYBSL stars shined like a beacon of hope, coming back from Friday night's first-round 16-2 loss to the Donelson Dawgs to score a 10-4 win over the West Nashville crew on Saturday.

Unsung heroes

Tournament Director Mike Tatum and his grounds crew consisting of league president Dorris Gentry, Dale Gordon, Steve Crawford, Jason Tatum, and Damarious Perkins were the unsung heroes of the tournament, working tirelessly between the weekend downpours to keep the playing field in immaculate condition.

The game versus WNSL was scoreless after one inning before the hometown boys plated five in the top of the second.

Kason Fuller, Easton McMahon Braxton Roberts, Peyton Cherry, Jaxon Alford, and Matthew Yeager all had one base knock apiece in the offensive onslaught.

The West Nashville squad pushed across three runs in the bottom of the third to make it a close 5-3 contest, before Marshall County countered with two runs in the next frame on base hits by Lucas Hery and Fuller's second run scoring hit of the game.

Chances disappear

Roberts reached on an error and scored in the fourth and Jakavan Curry rounded the sacks on an inside-the-park homerun in the fifth to up the orange and white's lead to 9-3.

WSNL scored an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth, but band once in the fifth, but manager John Christmas' squad scored run number 10 in the top of the sixth on a Roberts one-out double, followed by a run-scoring, hard hit ball off the bat of Cherry.

WSNL got their first runner on base in the bottom of the sixth before three straights outs ended the contest.

On Sunday, Marshall County took on Lawrenceburg, but was eliminated 12-3 by the purple and gold, who went on to win the title via a 9-7 triumph over Donelson in the championship game.
