An area soldier was killed during a training accident in Maryland on Monday.
Specialist Jeremy Darrell Tomlin, 22, was the crew chief of an Army UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter that crashed on a Maryland golf course while on a routine training flight.
Tomlin was a Bedford County native of the Chapel Hill area. He graduated from Community High School in Unionville in 2012.
He joined the Army after graduation and was serving with the 12th Aviation Battalion, based in the Washington, D.C. area at Fort Belvoir, VA.
Tomlin’s helicopter was on a routine midday training mission with two other Black Hawks when it crashed.
The two pilots of the helicopter are listed in critical condition in a Baltimore trauma center.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
In an interview with the Associated Press, his mother said that he was living his dream.
“He was scared of heights, but in the helicopter he felt safe,” Jenny Tomlin said. “Not a lot of people can say they died doing what they loved.”
