The Marshall County bats went silent for the second game in a row versus stellar pitching and the lack of hitting ended the hosts’ run at the 13-15 year old Babe Ruth Southeast Region Tournament via a 4-0 loss to Arlington, Virginia in the semifinals on Saturday at the Jonathan D. Hollingsworth Memorial Babe Ruth Field in Lewisburg.

Arlington posted a 5-0 record in the tournament and went on to win the title in the championship game, beating Lawrenceburg in an 11-10 slugfest to advance to the Babe Ruth World Series in Bismarck, North Dakota next week.

Marshall County only had four hits in the semifinal contest with Tristan Griggs going 2-for-3 and Trey Warner and Carson Cheek went 1-for-3.

Cheek turned in a yeoman’s job on the mound for Marshall County, tossing six innings of five-hit baseball.

Cheek gave up four runs (two earned) while striking out five and walking two Arlington batters.

Robert McDonough turned in a gem on the mound for Arlington with the complete game shutout win, striking out four and issuing zero walks in the contest.

McDonough did not allow a Marshall County baserunner past second base in the game and never had more than one runner on base in any inning.

McDonough set down Marshall County 1-2-3 in the top of the first inning and Arlington scored all the runs they needed in the home half of the inning as they plated three runs on just two hits with the big blow coming off the bat of Landon Thomas, who drilled a two-run double and the third run came home on a Marshall County error.

Cheek stroked a one-out single in the top of the second, but consecutive ground ball outs ended the inning and in the bottom of the frame, Arlington made it 4-0.

Alexander Zur lined a single in the 6-5 hole and after a strikeout, Zur went to second on a passed ball, third on a balk and came home on a fielder’s choice RBI by Zachary Moss.

Cheek allowed just four baserunners for the remainder of the contest, but Marshall County could not get any offense going in a game that lasted less than one hour and 30 minutes.

The title game was a back and forth affair with Lawrenceburg taking an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, only to see Arlington plate four runs in the home half of the stanza.

The Wildcats came back with a four-run top of the third to take a 6-4 lead.

Arlington sliced the lead to one run in the bottom of the fourth before taking an 8-6 lead via a three-run bottom of the fifth.

Lawrenceburg responded with two runs in the top of the sixth and were three outs from the SE Region title when they scored two more runs in the top of the seventh to take a 10-8 lead.

Arlington was not done as McDonough singled to lead off the bottom of the seventh and went to second on a ground ball out.

Thomas drew a base on balls before Langsman came up with the game-tying triple.

Two pitches later, a ground ball was misplayed at first and Thomas scooted home with the winning run.
