The Cornersville Bulldogs snapped a two-game losing streak on Tuesday night when they whipped the Hampshire Hawks 10-0 in five innings at home to remain undefeated in District 11-A play.

Cornersville (7-2, 5-0 District) buried the Hawks (1-5, 0-2 District) early and scored all 10 of their runs in the bottom of the first inning, while Bulldog starting pitcher Jody Sullivan did not allow a Hampshire base runner to advance past first base en route to recording the shutout victory.

Despite not scoring after the first inning, the Bulldogs finished with 10 hits and a walk against Hawk starting hurler Shawn Blalock to go along with three Hampshire errors.

Top hitters

Designated hitter Neil Davis led Cornersville's offensive attack by going 3-for-3 with a double, a RBI, and a run scored, while Tyler Lowey went 2-for-2 with a walk, a double, and two runs scored. Cody Blackburn, Tate Lowery, Sullivan, Aaron Fox, and David Looney each tallied a hit and a RBI for the Bulldogs as well.

"Shawn is a good pitcher so being able to get on him early was big for us because he shut us down the rest of the way," said CHS coach Ben Putman. "Even though we've gotten off to a good start in the District, we can go either way. We're in a good position right now, but we can end up anywhere from first to sixth in the District standings so we still have some work to do."

Good effort

Sullivan also turned in a strong outing on the mound and yielded just two hits and three walks in five scoreless innings of work while racking up nine strikeouts. With Tuesday's performance, Sullivan ran his record to 3-0 on the season and lowered his ERA to a miniscule 1.65.

"We're going to do whatever we have to do to win District games, but it was nice to end the game early because we're playing in a tournament this week. Now Jody can come back and pitch in a doubleheader on Saturday," said Putman.

Blalock and Kevin Harrington each singled to account for both Hampshire hits.
