The Cornersville Bulldogs (1-7), coming off a heartbreaking overtime loss at Zion Christian on Thursday, got no time to lick their wounds as they travelled to Santa Fe Friday night to face the Wildcats (3-4).

The Bulldogs got no sympathy from the Wildcats as Andy Slaughter poured in 15 points and Santa Fe rolled 64-43.

The Wildcats controlled the tip and immediately went up 2-0 on a basket by Jeremy Dotson.

Slaughter was fouled on short jumper and converted one of two free throws before Sammy Caudle sank a basket, followed by a running one-and shot by Slaughter and with less than a minute gone in the first quarter, the Wildcats led 7-0.

Eli Welch lofted a 15-footer to put Cornersville on the board before Slaughter and Welch swapped baskets, then Colton Stewart hit a two-pointer and Mason Calahan popped a 3-pointer to make it 11-7.

Caudle sank a free throw to make it 13-7, but Welch picked up his second foul with 3:04 left in the quarter and had to go to the Cornersville bench.

With Welch on the bench, the Wildcats went on a nine-point run, highlighted by a 3-pointer by Slaughter to make the score 23-7.

Welch re-entered the game to loft another jump shot and Calahan nailed another 3-pointer to make the score 22-12 at the end of the first quarter in favor of the Wildcats.

Cornersville saw sloppy passes and steals by Santa Fe contribute to the Wildcats going on a 10-2 run with the Bulldogs only score being made on another jumper by Welch.

The run that gave the Wildcat a 32-14 lead featured a 3-point shot by Dotson, who was fouled and made the free throw to complete a four-point play.

Two baskets by Michael Ashley cut into the Wildcat lead, but the Bulldogs could not score again before the halftime horn sounded leaving the Bulldogs trailing by 14 points.

The third quarter saw the defense of the Wildcats continue to cause the Bulldogs problems with more steals and turnovers.

Welch scored two more baskets while Wallace Francis and Bryce Woodard contributed field goals each, but Santa Fe kept the Bulldogs at bay.

The third quarter ended with Santa Fe in control, leading 52-32.

The Wildcats maintained their lead in the fourth quarter and at the 3:30 mark of the period, substitutes began to appear and as a result the play got frantic with both sides throwing the ball around and scrambling for loose balls on the floor.

The horn sounded and the pre-Christmas part of the schedule came to an end for both teams.

“We’ve got to a better job and be more efficient with the basketball,” Cornersville coach Peyton Newton said. “Our smaller guards had problems with their (Santa Fe’s) height.”

Asked what he would wish for his team for Christmas Newton said, “A win in a game soon. We’ve got a good group that do things right, they deserve a win.”
