Bulldogs remain winless on season

Posted 12/4/19

The Cornersville Bulldogs squared off against their longtime rival Richland Raiders at the Dwight Clark Gymnasium on Tuesday night.

The Raiders took advantage of poor shooting and shoddy ball handling by Cornersville and scored a lopsided 75-22 victory over the winless Bulldogs.

“It’s a long season and we’ll have a film session tomorrow and see if we can find some players who will battle,” Cornersville coach Peyton Newton said. “We didn’t respond well at the start of the game, so we will have to address that.”

“We’ll see them (Richland) again in the Christmas Tournament at their place.”

Richland controlled the opening tip and Raider Trey Luna scored the first two points of his 20-point effort for the night to put the Richland up 2-0.

The Bulldogs missed on their first shot and Montel Bobbit canned a 10-foot jump shot plus a free throw.

Daniel Nicholson added an inside jumper and Luna found the range again to put Richland up 9-0.

A time out by Newton at the 5:30 mark of the first quarter could not rally his troops as the Raiders rattled off 14 straight points to increase the lead to 23-0.

With time running out in the quarter, Tanner Reese scored the first Bulldog points with a floater in the lane and Mason Calahan added a three-pointer, but the Raiders scored the last eight points of the quarter to lead 31-5 as the first quarter horn sounded.

The second quarter was more of the same for the Raiders as they continued to make baskets and caused turnovers.

The Bulldogs never quit, but the first quarter hole they had dug for themselves proved to be too deep as again they could only manage five points with a basket by Brady Calahan, and a jumper with a free throw by Khi Canty for the only Cornersville points and the score at halftime stood 50-10 in favor of the Raiders.

The third quarter saw the Raiders applying pressure and making buckets as the Bulldog shots continued to fall off the rim.

Cornersville’s Eli Welch had a basket and consecutive blocked shots for the Bulldogs.

Cornersville’s Michael Ashley drilled a three-point shot and then added a free throw after being fouled in an attempted drive through the lane.

Luna continued to find the range and Nicholson and Bobbit made life miserable for the Bulldogs on the defensive end of the court.

The score stood at 68-18 at the end of the third quarter.

The fourth quarter saw the insertion of substitutes and at times the playing got ragged.

The Bulldogs were still cold from the field, but the Raiders with their starters on the bench could do little as the clock ticked away the time in the final quarter.

The Bulldogs youth and lack of experience showed and the Raiders made them pay.

The Bulldog must regroup as Collinwood comes calling on a rare Saturday afternoon game.
