The third-ranked Cornersville Bulldogs are like a runaway train, there is no stopping them.

The Frog Bottom boys continued their dominance at Linden Friday night, mauling Perry County 63-0 to record their fifth shutout in a row.

“I am very proud of the way our defense has been playing this year,” Cornersville coach Gerard Randolph said. “To hold our last five opponents to zero points is pretty incredible.”

“I can't say enough on how hard our guys and coaches work throughout the week on preparing a solid game plan for the upcoming week.”

The defense was nearly impenetrable, allowing 17 total yards by the Vikings in the contest.

“That's a testament to the preparation by the players and coaches, the defensive staff made sure that we had guys in the right spots to have that type of success defensively on Friday night,” Randolph said.

As dominant as the Bulldogs defense is, the offense is just as special and it was once again on Friday as Cornersville scored 35 first quarter points to put the Vikings away before everyone was even in their seats.

“The biggest thing for us as an offense is that we want to execute everything at a high level,” Randolph said. “We have several guys that can make plays on the offensive side of the ball, and we are trying to get guys involved.”

The Bulldogs love the big play on offense and they dialed up three in the 35-point first quarter beginning with an Eli Woodard 55-yard run to open up the scoring.

The red-hot Cameron Whitaker continued his standout senior season with a 60-yard touchdown run from scrimmage and a 70-yard punt return for a TD that made it 35-0.

Whitaker leads the Bulldogs with 734 all-purpose yards and has seven rushing touchdowns, one receiving TD, two punt returns for scores, and a fumble recovery for a TD.

“He (Whitaker) has certainly started off at a high level for our football team,” Randolph said. “Cameron will tell you none of this success he is having would be possible without his teammates. When he touches the field he has a lot of want to in him, just like his teammates.”

“This is a tight knit group that wants the best for each other. I am proud of the way Cameron is playing, and I hope he can continue that type of play as we continue to play each Friday night.”

Woodard is just as lethal as he leads the squad in both rushing (462) and receiving yards (156) and his 12 touchdowns are one more than Whitaker.

Trenten Warren caps off the three-headed monster backfield with six rushing touchdowns, including two at Perry County.

“Those skill guys will tell you that we only go as far as the big guys up front will take us,” Randolph stated. “I think that has been the key so far early on this season. We have some very talented guys up front that can get the job done.”

The improved Cornersville passing game was also on the mark once again Friday night as Henlee Mitchell tossed a 20-yard touchdown to Peyton Finch in the first quarter onslaught.

Mitchell is now 21-for-32 with 481 yards on the season and has nine touchdown passes without an interception.

“This group wants to see each other do well, and they are the first to congratulate each other after making big plays,” Randolph said.

The stout Bulldog defense held the Vikings to under 10 yards in rushing (8) and passing (9) Friday night.

Cornersville just doesn’t let anyone move the football anywhere.

Let this sink in.

The Bulldogs have outscored their opponents 282-20, outgained them 2,040 yards to 700, forced 16 turnovers, and have given up just three touchdowns this year, all coming in the season opener at Community.

“We have to continue to be students of the game by watching film, studying our scouting reports, and communicating on defense,” Randolph stated. “It has been fun watching the guys fly around and being physical and aggressive on defense.”

Another important aspect of all the blowout wins this season by the Bulldogs is that it gives younger players the opportunity to get real game minutes and that improves the depth on the current squad and it bodes well for the future.

“Anytime that you can get younger guys mixed in with the older guys and then having the younger guys play as much as they have this year helps us out tremendously,” Randolph said. “Not only have they played in a lot of varsity competition, but they have also played in four JV games this year as well, so the young guys are getting a ton of action early on this year and this should help us with depth in the future.”

This Friday night at Frog Bottom will be a special one as the senior class of 17 Bulldogs that have been the backbone of success will celebrate their last Homecoming when they look to extend their shutout streak to six versus the winless Fayetteville Tigers, who have been outscored 243-50, including three shutout losses.

“We are going to continue to treat this game as we have all season, we will tell them that this is the biggest game they have played in this year,” Randolph said. “As far as the Homecoming activities, we want the guys to enjoy it, but at the end of the day we let them know they still have a football game to be played.”
