After claiming a wild 18-11 extra inning victory over Columbia Academy the previous evening, the Cornersville Bulldogs completed the season sweep of CA on Tuesday afternoon when they defeated the Maury County private school 10-5 at home to remain undefeated in District 11-A play.
Columbia Academy (2-9, 1-5 District) hung tough early on and battled CHS to a 3-3 tie through the first three and a half innings of play.
Explosive inning
Cornersville (10-7, 8-0 District), however, broke the game open by crossing home plate six times in the bottom of the fourth to forge a 9-3 lead before coasting to the five-run victory.
Bolstered by their fourth inning offensive explosion, the Bulldogs finished with nine hits and 10 walks against three CA pitchers to go along with four Columbia Academy errors.
CHS right fielder David Looney enjoyed a big day at the plate, as he tallied a career high three hits, 2 RBI, and a run scored. Cody Blackburn and Tate Lowery notched two hits apiece for Cornersville as well with Blackburn driving in three runs, while Tyler Lowey and starting pitcher Matt Callender each added one hit.
Mound winner
Callender also picked up the win on the mound for the Bulldogs after yielding three runs in five innings of work on five hits and a walk to go along with four strikeouts. Jody Sullivan then came on in relief of Callender and allowed two unearned runs over the final two innings on one hit while recording two strikeouts.
Austin Braswell led Columbia Academy's offense with two hits and a RBI. CA starting pitcher Blake Hayes suffered the loss and gave up seven runs on seven hits and five walks in three plus innings of work.
The Bulldogs pounced on Columbia Academy early and pushed across three runs in the bottom of the first inning to grab a 3-0 lead. After Tyler Lowery and Tate Lowery both singled to put runners on first and second with no outs, Blackburn plated Tyler Lowery by lacing a double down the left field line to give CHS a 1-0 advantage. Following a walk by Neil Davis, which loaded the bases with no outs, Tate Lowery and courtesy runner Nate Huitt each scored on RBI groundouts by Jacob Griffis and Zach Richards.
Catching up
CA tallied a run in the top of the second with the help of two Cornersville errors and a RBI single by Braswell to trim the deficit to 3-1, before plating two runs in the top of the third on Billy Thurman RBI single and a bases loaded walk by Chip Wales to knot the game at 3-3.
The Bulldogs would quickly reclaim the momentum in the bottom of the fourth, as they crossed home plate six times in the frame on the strength of four walks, a hit batsman, and a pair of two-run singles by Blackburn and Looney to claim a 9-3 lead.
Columbia Academy scored two runs in the top of the sixth with the aid of a hit batsman, a Blake Luna single, and a CHS error to narrow the gap to 9-5, but Cornersville tacked on an insurance run thanks to two CA errors and a single by Looney to open up a 10-5 advantage.
Sullivan then retired Columbia Academy in order in the top of the seventh to seal the Bulldogs' 10th victory of the season.
