After defeating East Hickman (6-0) and Culleoka (3-1) the previous week, the Cornersville Lady Bulldogs had their modest two-game winning streak snapped on Thursday afternoon when they were thumped 9-1 by a strong Columbia Academy squad, which claimed the top seed in the southern division of the District 11-A standings.

Having lost to CA 10-2 in their previous encounter on Sept. 16, the Lady Bulldogs (5-4-1, 4-3-1 District) put up a fight at the start of the game and trailed only 1-0 late in the first half.

Sudden blast

CHS was eventually overwhelmed by Columbia Academy's superior skill, as CA (10-2, 8-0 District) tallied five goals in the final 10 minutes of the first half to take a 6-0 lead into the break.

Cornersville got on the board early in the second half when senior striker Amala Elder stole the ball from a Columbia Academy player before dribbling in and lining a shot over the head of CA goaltender Anna Grace Wolfe to trim the deficit to 6-1in the 42nd minute.

Columbia Academy continued to pour it on after that point and tacked on three more goals over the final 28 minutes of the contest to complete the sweep of the regular season series.

"Even though we lost, I think we made them work and got under their skin in the first half. I'm very proud of the way that we competed. You learn from playing teams like these. I think we've definitely gotten better by playing them," said CHS coach Lindsey Browning.

Freshman spark

Bolstered by their first half surge, CA outshot the Lady Bulldogs 24-9 overall. Freshman striker Cassidy Chambley spearheaded Columbia Academy's offensive attack by scoring four goals and dishing out an assist. Midfielder Chamberlain Green also tallied two goals and an assist, while Abigail Wolfe notched a goal and two assists. Anna Marie DeJarnette and Carly Garner registered a goal and an assist for CA as well.

Elder and Anna Claire Foster both attempted four shots to pace Cornersville, while Gloria Palma took one shot. CHS goaltender Hope Taylor finished with 12 saves overall.

After taking on Wayne County at home on Tuesday, the Lady Bulldogs return to action on Thursday afternoon when they host county rival Forrest at 4:30 p.m.
