Tuesday marked the 50th anniversary of the launch of the Apollo 11 mission that put astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on the Moon on July 20, 1969.

While most eyes are looking toward Saturday for the moon landing anniversary, the significance of launch day did not go unnoticed in Lewisburg as part of the Global Launch Day festivities designed to set a world record for number of rocket launches, any sort of rocket, on the day.

Groups all across the nation joined in the opportunity to teach science and history in one milestone event.

The Marshall County Memorial Library offered a stomp rocket program for kids to build their own rockets and experience launching them with air pressure.

Later in the day, the local Civil Air Patrol post invited local Boy Scouts to join them in firing motorized rockets at Rock Creek Park.
