A-Plus and Nichirin squared off in Friday night’s rainout makeup game and a close contest turned in to a late inning rout with A-Plus coming away with a 14-5 win.
The highlight of the night was the first over the fence home run this season at the Jonathan D. Hollingsworth Memorial Babe Ruth Field in Lewisburg by 15-year old MVP Carson Cheek as the Elks’ regular was playing in a pickup role, along with his Elks’ teammate Kyrklinn Wunderlin.
Cheek nailed a leadoff home run in the top of the seventh inning that easily cleared the left field fence.
A-Plus banged out 13 hits in the game with Cheek going a perfect 4-for-4 with a dinger, three RBIs, three runs scored, and two stolen bases.
Wunderlin put up a 3-for-5 night with a double, three RBIs, three runs scored, and four stolen bases.
A-Plus regular Daniel Sellars also went 3-for-5 at the plate and picked up the win on the mound, tossing 6.1 innings of solid baseball.
Cheek had an RBI base hit in a two-run first inning for A-Plus before Nichirin came back to tie the game in the home half of the frame on back-to-back RBI singles by Ballin Luttrell and Rob Hawkins.
There was no scoring in the second inning and A-Plus plated an unearned run in the top of the third to take a 3-2 lead.
Sellars escaped a bases loaded two-out jam in the bottom of the third and both starting hurlers tossed a 1-2-3 fourth inning.
A-Plus busted the game open in the top of the fifth inning as they scored four runs with Sellars, Wunderlin, Cheek, and Caleb McElhaney banging out consecutive base hits to start the inning.
Sellars continued his strong effort on the mound, keeping Nichirin off the scoreboard in the sixth and seventh innings.
Cheek drilled a 1-2 pitch over the left field fence to begin the top of the seventh inning and by the time the frame was over, A-Plus had scored seven runs to take a 14-2 lead.
Sellars got the first out of the bottom of the seventh inning before issuing a walk to James Hery.
Hery went to second on a passed ball and stole third and home to make it 14-3 before Jace McPherson came on in relief and walked Lucas Hery.
A double fielding error plated Lucas Hery and a Hawkins base hit made it a 14-5 contest before McPherson settled down and retired the next two Nichirin batters to end the game.
