The Cornersville Middle School basketball squads made a short trip to Lewisburg Middle School for an intra-county battle Tuesday night and came away with a sweep as the Lady Bulldogs won 32-23 before the Bulldogs beat the Tigers 33-25 in the nightcap.

The Lady Bulldogs jumped out to a 10-0 lead after the first quarter behind four points apiece by Anna Wood and Gracie Turner.

LMS finally got on the board on one free throw by Mallory Woodard at the 5:14 mark of the second quarter.

Turner had four of the five points scored by Cornersville in the second period and the Lady Bulldogs took a 16-5 lead to halftime.

The Lady Bulldogs kept their feet on the peddle in the third period as they went deep with Annabelle Mulliniks and Alicia Polk making two 3-pointers apiece, while Grayson Riner made one field goal.

Demiyah Blackman had three of the six points scored in the third quarter for LMS as they fell behind by 19 points at 30-11, entering the final period.

The Tigerettes got hot in the fourth quarter as Blackman added five points, Kayla Keiler scored all four of her points in the stanza, and Woodard scored three to end up as game-high scorer with nine points in the contest.

The Lady Bulldogs’ only basket of the final period came via a Molly Gross basket with one minute remaining in the contest.

Turner had eight points to lead the Lady Bulldogs in the scoring column, Mulliniks and Polk ended up with six points apiece, Wood and Riner added four apiece, and Gross and Jessie Woodard both netted a deuce.

Blackman finished with eight points, Keiler scored four, and Caroline Hollingsworth and Dorian Haislip added one marker apiece.

There seemed to be a lid on the basket to start the boys’ game as both squads struggled to put the ball in the net until Jonathan Bair broke the ice with a driving layup for LMS with 3:33 remaining in the first quarter.

Unfortunately, Bair’s bucket was the only one for LMS in the first period.

Mason Calahan, who scored a game-high 14 points, nailed the first of his two 3-pointers in the game and David Metcalf added a basket in the low post for the Bulldogs, who led 5-2 after the first six minutes.

A Kintarius Morris 3-pointer tied the game at 5-5, but once again the Bulldogs surged behind seven Calhan points and they outscored LMS 10-1 the remainder of the first half to lead 15-6 at the break.

The Tigers came out of the halftime break on fire with an 8-0 run as they cut the CMS lead to a single digit at 15-14.

Calahan stopped the LMS surge as he led a 6-0 Cornersville run with four free throws and Metcalf came up with a basket in the paint to make it a 20-14 contest.

The Tigers came back again as they scored the last six points in the quarter to tie the game at 20-20, entering the fourth period.

Khai Canty, Antomme Cawthorn, and Damari Braden all had four points in the big LMS comeback, while Bair added one bucket.

Bradden Hickman singlehandedly took over the game for the Bulldogs as he scored seven straight points on four free throws and a 3-pointer to spur a 7-0 CMS run to begin the fourth period.

LMS had one more comeback in them as they cut the CMS lead to four points at 27-23 on a Canty steal and score with 1:17 remaining in the game, but it was too little too late as the Bulldogs held on for the 33-25 win.

Metcalf finished with nine points, Hickman added eight, and Cayden White netted two points for CMS.

Canty had seven points to lead LMS, Bair scored six, and Cawthorn, Morris, and Damari Braden all ended up with four points apiece.
