County commissioners were invited to help the county mayor's secretary by helping pay her health insurance premium while she is on family leave.

Joe Boyd Liggett's secretary Shan Wells has not been at work since her son, Brandon Bradley, 17, was diagnosed with leukemia on June 2.

"We'd like to take up a donation for Shan to help pay her insurance while she is out," said Commission Chairman Nathan Johnson. "We're not pressuring anyone, but the envelope will be in D.W.'s office until Nov. 4." (D.W. is Dorris Wayne Weaver, register of deeds.)

Asked for an up date on BB's condition, Liggett reported, "Brandon has had some rough days. He's been pretty sick."

The bone marrow transplant was successful, Liggett said, and Brandon is not showing any cancer, but he has been terribly nauseated and doctors can't figure out why. He is out of the hospital and living in an apartment in Nashville with his mother.

According to a recent Facebook post by Wells, doctors will be checking for GVHD (graft versus host disease), a potentially serious post-transplant complication.

In other announcements at the end of the County Commission's short monthly meeting, Zoning and Codes Director Don Nelson reported the codes department was having a good quarter, with 754 inspections completed.

The department currently has three industrial projects, and Nelson reported the Calsonic Kansei North America expansion is proceeding at an "unbelievable pace," while Meiwa is just about ready to move into their building in the I-65 Commerce Park, and Imperial Foods, in the same park, is "moving pretty fast as well," recovering from earlier delays caused by wet weather.

Liggett added that Meiwa could be in production by March, a month earlier than expected.

The Fast Track infrastructure grants in the I-65 Commerce Park were nearly completed, Liggett said. "We appreciate your cooperation in matching that," he said to commissioners.

Commissioner Tom Sumners announced the building committee would hold an emergency meeting at 5 p.m. Thursday to discuss HVAC issues at the courthouse.

Commissioner Dean Delk, principal of Chapel Hill Elementary School, announced his school would be holding a Veterans Day program, starting at 8 a.m. Monday, Nov. 11.

"They need to see what it is, what it's all about, and what it means to this country," said Delk, referring to the benefit of inviting veterans to the school for students to meet. "It puts faces with the event," he said.

Commissioner Anna Childress announced Oak Grove Elementary School would be holding their Fall Festival from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1, and urged everyone to attend.

Delk then announced that his school would be holding their 51st Annual Turkey Supper, starting at 4:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15.

After 20 minutes, the County Commission's October meeting was adjourned. Commissioner Barry Spivey was absent.
