The Cornersville Lady Bulldogs (6-3) had their three-game winning streak snapped on Friday night when they lost 58-36 to the Community Viqueens (11-2) at the Community Christmas Classic.

Playing without starting shooting guard Breanne Dunkleman, Cornersville couldn't match Community's offensive firepower, as the Viqueens built a 31-20 lead in the first half before outscoring the Lady Bulldogs 27-16 over the final two quarters to pull away for the 22-point victory.

'Played hard'

"Community is a good team and we played hard the whole time. Even when we were down by 20 points, the girls kept fighting," said Cornersville coach Peyton Newton. "Not having Breanne tonight hurt because we didn't have an extra ball handler against their press. We still probably wouldn't have won the game had she been here, but the game would have been closer."

Although the Lady Bulldogs outscored the Viqueens 18-10 at the foul line, Community finished with a 23-8 edge in field goals.

Senior shooting guard Brooke Holt led Cornersville with a game high 15 points and center Ashley Umbles tallied 11 points. Britton Stewart chipped in three points as well, while Samantha Prosser, Kelsey Wortham, and Morgan Terry notched two points apiece. Madison Hopkins rounded out the scoring for the Lady Bulldogs with one point.

Sarah Pierce paced the Viqueens with 13 points and Mercedes Huntley added 11 points. Erin Thompson also tallied seven points, while Kaitlyn Ensey and Jordan Huntley both notched six points. Taylor Thompson and Lacey Reed chipped in five points apiece for Community as well and Jacey Holt and Kristen Brothers had three and two points respectively.

Runs don't help

The Viqueens took control of the game early and jumped out to a 21-9 lead in the first quarter on the strength of nine points from Mercedes Huntley and six points from Jordan Huntley.

Cornersville outscored Community 11-10 in the second period thanks to nine points from Holt and a pair of Umbles free throws to trim the deficit to 31-20 at the break, but the Viqueens broke the game open in the third quarter by putting together a 20-5 run behind 11 points from Pierce to forge a 51-25 advantage.

The Lady Bulldogs then outscored Community 11-7 in the fourth period with the help of treys from Holt and Stewart for the 58-36 final.
