Cornersville golfers sweep Richland

On Tuesday afternoon, the Cornersville Bulldogs golf team assured themselves a winning record for the 2013 season by defeating the Richland Raiders at the Lewisburg Recreation Center.

The Bulldogs (7-4) posted a team score of 181 after taking the four best rounds from each team, while Richland finished 37 strokes back with a 218.

Cornersville golfers sweep Richland

On Tuesday afternoon, the Cornersville Bulldogs golf team assured themselves a winning record for the 2013 season by defeating the Richland Raiders at the Lewisburg Recreation Center.

The Bulldogs (7-4) posted a team score of 181 after taking the four best rounds from each team, while Richland finished 37 strokes back with a 218.

Junior Tate Lowery turned in the best round of the match and shot a 40 over nine holes to lead Cornersville to the win. Matthew Karban followed Lowery with a 45, while Colby Downs and Zack Smith carded a 46 and a 50 respectively. J.D. Crabtree also tallied a 52 for the Bulldogs and Blake Calahan notched a 58.

Improving team

"I'm excited about the way they're playing. Tate has maintained solid scores the entire season, but the other kids have improved to help him out," said CHS coach Joy McMasters. "They're really excited and optimistic about their chances in the District tournament next week."

Conner Perkins paced Richland with a 48, while Cameron Jones shot a 49. Nathanial Emerson and Gage Lane registered a 60 and a 61 respectively for the Raiders as well.

In the girls match, the Lady Bulldogs were awarded a forfeit victory to even their record at 3-3 when Richland fielded just one player.

Best score yet

Carly Salsman was the low player of the match and led Cornersville with a career best 52, while Ellie Jackson tallied a 53 to give the Lady Bulldogs a team score of 105. Emma Reese also carded a 58 for CHS.

"Carly played great today and all the girls have made tremendous improvement this year. They're looking forward to going to the District tournament and competing. We have a great group of kids on both teams this year," said McMasters.

Katie Keene was the Lady Raiders lone representative on the golf course and finished with a 57.

After taking on Columbia Academy at Stoneybrook Golf Course on Thursday, Cornersville will compete in the District 11-A-AA tournament on Monday at GreyStone Golf Club in Dickson.
