Let the Horses Talk

The Walking Horse spotlight this week will be on the town of Cornersville as the Lions’ Club will present their 73rd annual walking horse show. Located on the horse show grounds at 210 Coleman Road, it is behind the Cornersville School. Beginning in 1946, this annual event has become one of the main stops on the walking horse circuit. The show begins Friday at 6 p.m. with 34 classes of beautiful walking horses. There are various types: Pleasure, Colts, Show Pleasure, Amateur, Pony, Park Performance, Specialty (non-canter) and Performance.

Over $7,000 in prize money and trophies will be given to the winners with the stake class a total purse of $550. Judging the show is longtime trainer Jamie Bradshaw of Alabama, Ring Master Steve Wolaver of Diana, Bobby Sands of Columbia announcing, and Brian Perry as the organist.

Bobby McDaniel again serves as horse show chairman, having served in this position for over 20 years. Pam Murphree is the Lions Club president. Proceeds from the show go for scholarships for high school seniors, Sight for the Blind, and other deserving charities in the community.

As Cornersville has become a mecca for school academics, sports, the Lions Club uses this show to also showcase the community.

A lot of winners from this show have gone on to world championship honors at the Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration in Shelbyville in late August. The show is also known for its great food from the concession stand with country ham and other great treats. So come to the show, eat supper, and enjoy one of the best one-night shows in middle Tennessee. Adult admission is $5. Tickets for children 12 and under are $1.
