CHAPEL HILL — The Forrest Lady Rockets (2-5) hosted the Liberty Creek Lady Wolves (3-3) Friday night, ending their five-game losing streak with a 43-34 win.
In the end, it was the hustle and defensive efforts of the Lady Rockets that put them on top.
Forrest had a strong start early in the game, coming out quick with a 7-0 lead, causing Liberty Creek to call a timeout only a minute and thirty seconds into the game.
A short scoring drought and missed rebounding opportunities for the Lady Rockets allowed the Wolves to start inching in, ultimately taking the lead 9-8.
Two made free throws from sophomore Kinslee Inlow and a basket from the elbow from senior Macy Kirby put the Lady Rockets back in the lead.
But the Wolves continued to put up an offensive battle, driving the lane and drawing fouls.
With twenty seconds remaining in the half, sophomore Anna Rabun knocked down a shot from the corner, keeping the Lady Rockets within striking distance.
At the half, Liberty Creek had the 16-15 lead.
The Lady Rockets held their own offensively in the third quarter, Inlow, Carli Warner, and Josie Brown all finding net from behind the arc, maintaining the lead.
Forrest turned up the defensive heat in the fourth quarter, creating turnovers and taking advantage of the Wolves’ mishaps on the opposite end, Senior Megan Mealer getting the Lady Rockets started with a steal and a made layup, while also drawing the foul.
It was Mealer again making the grab from Liberty Creek, with a pass to Kirby for the easy layup, while moments later Kirby got the steal resulting in a layup for Inlow, giving Forrest their biggest lead of the night at 38-28.
After spending some time at the foul line in double bonus, the Lady Rockets sealed the win, 43-34.
Inlow led the Lady Rockets with 13 points.
The Lady Rockets will travel to Moore County Tuesday night. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
