The Duck River Raceway Park in Wheel is in the midst of a successful, fun-filled 40th Anniversary season and the legendary oval looks fantastic with the recent facility improvements made by new owners Bob and Cathy Harris, who purchased the track in July 2012.
Brand new air-conditioned restrooms, concession stands, media room, children's playground, track guardrails, and a fresh clay racing surface has revived the fabled venue.
On Saturday night, the Duck's track founder and longtime dirt guru Sam Pugh had groomed the track to a hardened, slick surface, as tricky as ever, for a full slate of racing, minus the Super Late Models, who were over in Winchester.
Kajun Mini Stock
The featured event for the evening was the running of the Kajun Mini Stock Association (KMSA) machines with Manchester's John Smartt continuing his dominance of the series by winning his fourth consecutive KMSA event to claim a $1,000 prize.
Smartt widened his lead in the points race to 95 over Jason Todd, who finished in third place. Austin Baxley came home in second place, while Dustin Stephens finished fourth and Lynnville's Troy Jett rounded out the top five.
2-Barrel
Shelbyville's Matt Odeneal cashed the biggest paycheck of the evening, winning a cool 1,200 bucks over 15 competitors in the 2-Barrel feature event.
Robert Stutts (Murfreesboro) crossed the finish line in second place, Brian Hudson (Elora) was third, Tommy Davis (Shelbyville) took the fourth spot, and Herman Radke (Elmwood) was neck and neck with Davis at the checkered flag for fifth place.
Odeneal moved to within 10 points (339-329) of leader Mitch Thornton, who had a rough night, finishing in 15th place.
Pure Pony
In the Pure Pony Division, Wartrace driver Joshua Nichols took the checkered flag to win the $300 prize and inch a little closer to points leader Freddie Smith, who finished in ninth place.
Unionville's Tim Wilson took second place Saturday with Junior Daniels (Shelbyville), Carl Bowling (Murfreesboro), and Lewisburg's Gaven Stegall rounding out the top five finishers.
Smith leads Chapel Hill's Opie Nichols by 33 points as Nichols finished the race in the 11th spot.
Modified Street
In the Modified Street Division, points leader Russell Boothe from Nolensville started at the tail end of a six-car field, before working his way through traffic to take first place and the $200 prize.
Shelbyville's Joel Landers came across the finish line second, Jason Savage (Mt. Juliet) was third, Scott Vaupel (Lebanon) was next in fourth, and Phillip Heithcock (Columbia) was the fifth place finisher.
Lewisburg's Andy Rogers was sixth, falling 53 points behind Boothe in the season standings.
Street Stock
Music City's Joshua Hood won a Ben Franklin in the Street Stock race with points leader Mike Mitchell on his bumper for second at the checkered flag.
Hood trails Mitchell (Fayetteville) by a wide 160-point margin in the season series.
David G. Upton Sr. finished third, with Ashley Hooten and Dave Deuel finishing fourth and fifth respectively.
Rookie League
In Rookie League action, Unionville's Zach Taylor started on the outside of row one and was out in front of the five-machine field by the end of the race for a $50 payout and a 13-point lead in the current points standings over Tyler Cason.
Trace Underwood (Shelbyville) took second, Justin Farless (McMinnville) was third, Matthew Smithson was fourth, and Cason (Christiana) finished fifth.
Outlaw
A three-car Outlaw Division shootout went to Brentwood's Keith Lane, who claimed $200 and 45 points with the victory, extending his first place lead in the season standings to 58 points over Bo Owens from Unionville, who finished second, while Rock Island's Michael Collins was in third.
