Eagles continue long winning streak over Bulldogs

Ninth-ranked Eagleville beat Cornersville 58-44 Friday night to complete the regular series sweep and balloon their winning streak to 22 games over the Bulldogs, dating back to 2001.

“They always have solid teams,” Cornersville coach Peyton Newton said. “I think you'll start seeing us compete against teams like them soon. Our hard work will pay off.”

Eagleville standout Ryley McClaran scored 15 first half points and then sat the bench for the majority of the second half as the Eagles led 31-10 at halftime.

“They can all shoot the ball well and you kind of have to pick your poison,” Newton said. “We started off trying to send a double team at him (McClaran) but the guy we left hit shots so we had to adjust.”

“They are solid, but our guys did as they were coached and fought hard on defense all night.”

Cornersville’s Mason Calahan was the game’s high-scorer with 17 points and one 3-pointer, plus a solid 4-for-7 effort from the free throw line.

The Eagles jumped out to an early 12-0 lead, holding the Bulldogs scoreless until the 2:07 mark of the first period when Eli Welch scored in the low post.

The Bulldogs trailed 13-3 at the end of the quarter and went down 16-3 when Caleb Brown nailed a 3-pointer at the outset of the second quarter.

“You can't get down big early against a team like that,” Newton said. “We don't have the fire power right now on offense to make those big comebacks, but hopefully we will grow and that will change soon if we face that challenge again.”

Welch scored again for the Bulldogs before Eagleville outscored the home team 15-5 for the remainder of the period and led by 21 points at the half.

The Eagles scored the first six points of the second half before Calahan drilled a 3-pointer to get the Bulldogs on the board with 3:53 to play in the third quarter.

Eagleville led by 27 points midway through the stanza, but the Bulldogs scored five straight on a Michael Ashley 3-pointer followed by a steal and scored by Calahan.

The Eagles maintained the large lead at 46-23 entering the fourth quarter.

The Bulldogs picked up the pace in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Eagles 21-12 with Calahan, Ashley, and Christian Wilson all scoring five points in the stanza.

“We love our guys, young and old,” Newton said. “Our older guys have really helped set a good foundation for our younger guys to succeed very soon.”

Cornersville is in last place in the District 8-A standings and will play the number three seed in the first round of the district tournament at Huntland next week. The top two teams get byes in the first round.

The Region 4-A Tournament is at Eagleville.

The Bulldogs lost 55-27 at home to Moore County Tuesday night in their final regular season district game.
