Eagles hand Rockets fifth loss in a row

Posted 12/15/19

The Forrest Rockets were stuck in a four-game losing streak and the recipe for busting out was not a good one as they headed to Eagleville Friday night where they got blown out 74-42.

Eagleville is coming off a 31-5 season in 2018-2019, losing in the state semifinals to the eventual Class A state champion Columbia Academy Bulldogs.

“We can't afford to get down to a team that has three returning starters from a Final Four run last year,” first-year Forrest coach Corey Bishop said. “However, I thought in the second half we matched them play for play and outscored them.”

“We could've easily let the game get away big time, but we continued to fight it out.”

The Eagles (7-1) were also coming off their first loss of the season at Community and wasted little time putting the Rockets away as scored 23 first quarter points, including 3-pointers by Bobby Snell, Nuni Davenport, and former Chapel Hill player Ryley McClaran.

The Rockets’ only points in the period came on field goals by CJ Sanchez and Connor Lewis as they trailed by 19 points after the first eight minutes.

The second period was not much better as the Eagles scored 24 more with McClaran going off, scoring 17 out of his game-high 32 points in the quarter.

“Obviously, he's (McClaran) a great player, the way he can score in a variety of ways makes him a tough matchup,” Bishop said. “I've known him since he was a little kid and he is a tireless worker.” “He's going to be successful as he moves on the next level.”

The Rockets did not break double digits in the stanza as Andrew Timmons scored four points, Hunter Bennett hit a 3-pointer, and Cameron Curtis got his first field goal of the game and Forrest trailed 47-13 at the half.

The Rockets did outscore Eagleville in the third quarter with Curtis picking up the pace, scoring 12 out the 14 points in the stanza for the Rockets.

“Cameron had a solid game,” Bishop said. “We believe he is most successful when we can get him some shots close to the basket so he can utilize his athleticism.” “That's an area for him we are going to continue to build with him as the season goes on, so he can become a threat from both the inside and outside.”

McClaran did not play in the fourth quarter, but the Rockets could not outpace the Eagles who won the stanza 17-15 to take the 32-point win.

Asked how the Rockets can turn things around, Bishop said, “Continuing to buy in to the system and culture that we are trying to build. Buying into rebounding and defense, while perfecting things that we can control.”

Curtis ended up with a team-high 24 points while Timmons scored seven, CJ Sanchez netted four, Bennett had the one trey, and Cole Villazon and Lewis had two points apiece.

Eagleville went an impressive 24-for-26 from the free throw line with McClaran going a perfect 12-for-12 while the Rockets went a solid 8-for-12 with Curtis canning 7-of-10 from the charity stripe.

“Averaging 20 turnovers a game is not going to lead to any wins against solid teams,” Bishop said. “We had 21 turnovers, which could've possibly been 42-63 points that we didn't get on the offense end.”

“We are working hard to get that fixed behind the scenes through film and practice.”

Forrest (1-8) heads to the small confines at Summertown tomorrow night where they will try to break a five-game losing streak versus the Eagles (3-4).

“I've never coached or played a game in Summertown where the game wasn't tough,” Bishop said. “It's going to be a great atmosphere and one that our kids' need to experience because it will be as close to a playoff atmosphere as you can get in high school basketball.”

“We are going to keep working and have a game plan we feel will be successful.”
