It was a tale of two halves for the FMS Lady Rockets in Wednesday night's first round match-up in the Duck River Valley Conference Tournament in Chapel Hill versus Westwood as Forrest scored a measly 12 points in an ugly first half before rounding back in to form in the second to win going away 37-16.

"I was a little nervous," said FMS head coach Rhea Webb. "But, I knew they had it in them and if they started playing as a team, I knew they would come back."

Both sides struggle

Forrest managed just a pair of three-pointers by Emma Stacey and Madison Curtis in the first quarter, but still led 6-2 because their namesakes from Manchester tallied a lone bucket by Hannah Jenkins with only 20.4 seconds remaining in the stanza.

The two squads combined for 13 turnovers in the period and it did not get any better in the second period, especially for FMS, who saw Westwood come back to tie the game at 12-12 at the half.

Eight out of the 10 points scored by Westwood in the second quarter came off second chance baskets in the paint.

"I told them at the half that this was the worst we did all year in rebounding and if we don't do better, we will get beat," said Webb.

Sudden change

The Lady Rockets took Webb's halftime speech to heart as they came out in the second half as a completely different squad, dominating the glass, while putting the clamps on the Westwood offense.

Westwood managed two points in the third quarter and two more in the fourth, while FMS exploded on offense.

Jordan Yelensky and Caitlin McKenzie came up huge in the third quarter as they both scored a half dozen points apiece, opening up a 10-point lead at 24-14 for FMS, entering the final eight minutes.

Katey Harmon, who was held scoreless for three periods, got on the board in a hurry in the fourth quarter, burying a long three-pointer on FMS' first touch.

Total control

Moments later, Harmon scored on a rebound and put-back to make it 29-14 and then put Westwood away for good when she took a pass over the top from Curtis for a fast break bucket that gave the Lady Rockets a 17-point lead.

Stevie Ray made it a 35-14 ballgame on a rebound and put-back before Westwood finally scored with under a minute to go in the game.

Emily Yost put the cap on the game for the Lady Rockets (9-6), who move on to Thursday night's semifinal versus the No. 1 seeded and undefeated CMS Viqueens.
