The FMS Lady Rockets ended the regular season in style Wednesday afternoon, beating Community 8-2 to finish with a 16-1 record, going in to this weekend's Big South Conference Tournament, where they will hope to defend their title.

Lainey Mays struck out a season-high 15 Viqueen hitters in a complete game effort, while giving up six hits and walking one.

Perfect at plate

Mays also had a perfect day at the plate, going 3-3 with two triples, three RBIs, two runs scored, and a stolen base.

Jordan Yelensky powered her way to a 2-2 performance on offense with a triple, two runs scored, two RBIs, and a base on balls.

Mays set down Community 1-2-3 in the top of the first before leading off the home half of the inning with a single.

Mays stole second and went to third on a passed ball before strutting home on Yelensky's triple.

Two batters later, Yelensky scored on a wild pitch, making it 2-0.

Top effort

Mays gave up a leadoff single to Alyssa Freeman in the top of the second, but struck out two of the next three batters to end the inning.

Brooke Paul's leadoff base hit was wasted by FMS in the bottom of the inning and Mays set down the Viqueens 1-2-3 in the third.

Yelensky and Kyleah Hengesbach scored on an outfield error to make it 4-0 in the home half of the inning.

Haley Reed singled to lead off the top of the fourth and stole second and that was where she stayed as Mays mowed down the next three Community batters, all on swinging strikeouts.

Chloe Bruce reached on a Community error to lead off the home portion of the fourth inning before Rickee Gayle Cater and Emma Stacey followed with back-to-back bunt singles to load the sacks.

Big hit

Mays drilled a laser down the left-field line, clearing the bases, and Yelensky legged out an infield hit to drive in Mays to make it an 8-0 contest.

Community loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the fifth, but Mays struck out the next two hitters and the inning ended on a nice running catch by Jasmine Runk in center field.

There was no more scoring by FMS in the contest and Community finally got on the board in the top of the seventh on an RBI base hit by Sydney Seagroves and a passed ball to make the final score 8-2.

Top seeded FMS will open up tournament play at 4:30 p.m. on Friday versus E.A. Cox, while No. 2 seed Lewisburg Middle School will play Columbia Academy, and Cornersville will meet Spring Hill to finalize the first round of the double elimination tournament at Forrest.
