Lisa Chapman, a former teacher at Chapel Hill Elementary School, is raising money for Shannon Brown, a teacher of CHES. Shannon is a 17-year veteran of the Marshall County School System and is currently teaching third grade. Shannon is battling breast cancer and is undergoing chemotherapy treatments. She will begin radiation in the fall.

In her best attempt to help her friend, Lisa thought she would take a different approach to fundraising, and decided she would use herself as inspiration.

Beginning June 1, Lisa has volunteered her efforts to lose weight to help raise money for Shannon's medical bills. Lisa is asking for those interested in helping to sponsor her as she loses weight.

For example, if a person pledges $2 per pound lost, if Lisa has lost 10 pounds when she weighs in, they will owe $20.

100 percent of the money raised by this method will go directly to Shannon.

At press time, Lisa has pledges totaling $85 per pound lost. She has also received $355 for Shannon in one-time donations. The first weigh in will be July 1.

If you would like to be a part of this and help Lisa raise money for Shannon please call (931) 993-2449 or find her on Facebook at Shane-Lisa Chapman.

Girl Scouts, many of whom have been Shannon's students, are also raising funds for her.

Chapel Hill Girl Scout Troop 1269 is working toward achieving the Bronze award, the top level of achievement for junior scouts. In order to reach this goal the girls must complete 30 hours of service on a project that is meaningful to their community.

The girls were impressed by the way Shannon showed up every day to teach, even though she was sick, reported Troop Leader Jeannette Benns.

"She did not give up on us, so we won't give up on her," the girls said.

The Scout Troop plans several small fundraisers for Shannon between now and Sept. 30, the Bronze award deadline. These will include, but are not limited to, a corn hole tournament, an auction, a bake sale, and a penny drive.

To find out more, call Jeannette Benns at (615) 945-4111 or Heather Bowman at (615) 969-5633.
