The road warrior Marshall County Tigers picked up their second away game win in row, pummeling Springfield 42-12 Friday night.

“I’m really happy with how the guys handled a two-hour bus trip and got themselves ready to play a real quality program on the road,” Marshall County coach Thomas Osteen said.

The number-eight ranked Tigers turned in a balanced attack on offense, rushing for 196 yards while quarterback Bryson Hammons went 10-for-16 for 158 yards and a touchdown in the aerial game.

Senior Kel Greer had a career night for Marshall County, rushing for 128 yards and four touchdowns while his classmate Javarria Rucker ran for 74 yards and a score as the lethal combination could not be stopped by the Yellow Jackets.

“I think one of the best things we have going is that we have multiple people to get the ball to,” Osteen said. “Hopefully that will make us tough to defend and keeps the defense from keying on one player.”

“Rucker and Greer are often on the field together at the same time, so that really helps offset some of our tendencies.”

Rucker also caught two passes for 36 yards and Greer grabbed one Hammons pass for 22 yards.

After a scoreless first period, the Tigers took off as they scored 14 points in each of the last three quarters to put the game away.

“We started out a little slow offensively, but after a quarter kinda got our bearing about us and did some really good things,” Osteen said. “We controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball most all of the night.”

The Tigers’ defense was also stout, causing four Springfield turnovers in the game as Devonte Davis and Hunter Rolof had interceptions while Tez Allen and Chandler Davis had one fumble recovery apiece.

“Anytime you can get four takeaways it gives you a great chance to win a ball game,” Osteen said. “We stress the importance of turnovers each week and the guys have really taken pride in creating those momentum changing plays.”

Allen continued his stellar senior season, leading the Tigers with nine tackles, two for loss and Allen also had a sack.

“Tez has really had a nice year,” Osteen said. “He has a nose for the ball and has a rare blend of strength and speed for an interior lineman.’

Sophomore defensive lineman Chandler Davis had six tackles, one for loss, and he also came up with a sack.

“Chandler is a first year starter who has really gotten better each week,” Osteen stated.

Riqkyous Summers had eight tackles, Logan McKnight six, Hayden Sheppard five, Devonte Davis, Rolof, Christian Stacey, and Andrew Gold four, Terry Gulley three, Jeff Carls two, and Kamron Dunnavant, Demari Braden, and Zach Moore all had one takedown apiece.

For the second time this season, The Tigers have a short week as they prepare for a Thursday night contest at Lawrence County, who got pummeled 37-7 at Forrest Friday night.

Marshall County (5-1, 2-0) has beaten the Wildcats (3-3, 0-2) four straight years by a combined score of 186-8, including back-to-back shutouts in 2016 and 2017.

“The short week makes it tougher to get all your normal preparation, but hopefully seven games into the year it is not as big a deal of losing a day as it might be earlier,” Osteen said.

The Tigers finish the season with three home games at Preston Hopkins Field in Lewisburg, beginning with a big showdown with archrival Giles County next week.

MCHS has a bye week after the battle with the Bobcats before finishing the regular season campaign versus Spring Hill and fifth-ranked Nolensville.
