"Who (Jesus Christ) gave Himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto Himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works." - Titus 2:14

All believers have been redeemed by the blood of Christ and purified unto Him. As a result we are called a peculiar or special people zealous of good works. Within the Christian community the word "zeal" is not used very often. Zeal is something that flows out of a thankful heart. As special people we understand how far God reached down to save us. He went down so far as to take on human flesh in a manger at Bethlehem. He went so far down as to engage the devil for us. He went so far down as to redeem us from a sin cursed world by dying a criminal's death on the cross. He went so far down as to take our sins into the grave never to be seen again. Therefore as a special people, our Savior inspires and motivates us to be zealous for His glory.

What is zeal? Some say zeal is exhilaration or excitement. But excitement and exhilaration comes and goes like the momentary thrills of a championship ball game.

So what is biblical zeal? Zeal is faith, hope, and love ignited by an intense passion and devotion for God's glory.

The Italian sculptor, Cellini, told of receiving a huge block of marble with one flaw, and because of this one flaw no artist would ever submit a design. Except one! In the public square of Florence a fence and a little shack was erected around the marble for the artist. For two years the sculptor labored with great zeal. Finally the fence was torn down and the shack removed. Ever since, Italy and the entire world have marveled at Michelangelo's "David." In that block of marble was a statue that others did not see, but Michelangelo. His passion and zeal for what he could see produce a marvelous work, and so now others can see it.

Dear child of God the world cannot see the glory of God in Jesus Christ as you can. You see something that they do not, but they can see your works. In Matthew 5:16 Jesus said, "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven." As your works glorify Him, the world around you will see your light shining bright upon God, and through your zeal they may see the glory of God as well.

Lastly, is your spiritual gas tank full of zeal or are you running on empty? If you're empty during this holiday season, go back and start at the manger, then go to the cross and remember what all Christ did for you. From the cradle to the cross, renew your mind in Christ so that your zeal and passion will be ignited for God's glory.
