Huntland claimed their second straight Cornersville Athletic Booster Club tournament title on Saturday night when they defeated the Cornersville Middle School Lady Bulldogs 32-14 in the championship game.
Having lost all four meetings against the Lady Hornets over the last two years, the Lady Bulldogs (3-2) managed to stay within shouting distance of Huntland early on and trailed just 12-7 at halftime.
Streak's over
The Lady Hornets (3-0) then found another gear in the second half and outscored CMS 20-7 over the final two quarters to snap CMS' three-game winning streak.
Bolstered by an 8-of-17 shooting performance in the second half, Huntland finished with a 12-6 advantage in field goals and 2-0 edge in three-pointers.
Although Cornersville outrebounded the Lady Hornets 30-13 and held a 15-9 advantage on the offensive boards, Huntland offset the Lady Bulldogs performance on the boards by forcing 32 Cornersville turnovers with the help of their full court press. The Lady Hornets, conversely, committed only 15 turnovers.
'One of those nights'
"Tonight was just one of those nights. Our players were off their game and I was off my game. It wasn't a good night for anybody," said CMS coach Peyton. "I told them that Huntland was a different team than last year and that we were a different team than last year, but we just couldn't do anything right. We're just going to have to go back to work and keep trying to get better."
Center Morgan Terry led the Lady Bulldogs with six points, eight rebounds, and three steals, while KiAnna Holder added three points. Emma Mitchell and Gabriel King chipped in two points apiece for Cornersville as well, and Hannah Singleton had one point.
Taylor Elrod paced Huntland with 15 points and Kara Smith tallied six points. Savannah Foster also notched three points for the Lady Hornets, while Caylee McLennan, Courtney Frame, Gabe Bland, and Mikayla Edwards each had two points.
Huntland played suffocating defense at the start of the game and held CMS scoreless in the first quarter en route to building a 6-0 lead.
Lady Bulldog run
The Lady Bulldogs put together a 7-3 run with the help of four points from Terry and a Holder layup to narrow the gap to 9-7 with 2:25 left in the second period before the Lady Hornets tallied the final three points of the half to open up a 12-7 advantage.
Huntland began to distance themselves from Cornersville at the start of the second half and opened the third quarter with a 7-1 spurt to stretch their lead to 20-8.
Mitchell scored on a layup late in the third period to trim the deficit to 20-10, but the Lady Hornets rattled off 10 straight points to forge a 30-10 advantage with 2:15 left before cruising to the 32-14 victory.
