The Cornersville Lady Bulldogs (6-4, 5-2 District) recorded their third straight blowout victory on Thursday when they defeated a mistake prone Mt. Pleasant Lady Tiger squad 11-0 in five innings at home on Senior Night.
CHS starting pitcher Taylor Wolaver handcuffed the Lady Tiger lineup, as she tossed a one-hitter while registering seven strikeouts and issuing no walks en route to earning her fifth victory of the season.
Settling down
"Taylor started off slow, but she finished strong. She didn't pitch our last game and struggled with her control for the first two batters, but she settled down and pitched well after that," said Cornersville coach Eric Crabtree.
The Lady Bulldogs, meanwhile, finished with a modest seven hits against Mt. Pleasant starting hurler Kaylee Davis, but took advantage of four walks and eight Lady Tiger errors.
"They made a lot of mistakes and we capitalized on them. That was the difference in the game," said Crabtree.
Kaitlyn Rogers led Cornersville's offensive attack by going 2-for-4 with two doubles, 3 RBI, and a run scored, while MandiLynn Calahan, Ashley Beard, Kelsey Wortham, Wolaver, and Breanne Dunkleman all notched one hit with Calahan, Beard, and Wortham each driving in one run.
Emily McNeese singled to account for Mt. Pleasant's lone hit of the contest.
Breaking out
Davis held Cornersville scoreless the first two innings, but the Lady Bulldogs broke the game open in the bottom of the third by pushing across six runs in the frame to seize a 6-0 lead.
After Miranda Cooksey and Makayla Campbell sandwiched walks around a Calahan single to load the bases with one out, Cooksey scored when Lady Tiger third baseman KaLeigh Frazier mishandled a groundball by Rogers to make it 1-0. Calahan and Campbell then both raced home on a Lady Tiger throwing error to give CHS a 3-0 advantage while Carson Coble reached second base on the play. Following a RBI groundout by Wolaver, Beard plated Coble with a RBI infield single to make it 5-0. Beard then advanced to second on a Dunkleman single before coming home on a RBI single by Wortham.
Mt. Pleasant stopped
Mt. Pleasant had a chance to get on the board in the top of the fourth after putting runners on first and second with two outs thanks to a McNeese single and a Cornersville error, but Wolaver retired Macy Davis on a infield pop up to keep the shutout intact.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Lady Bulldogs crossed home plate five more times to bring the mercy rule into effect.
Wolaver doubled to leadoff off the inning before courtesy runner Madison Hopkins eventually scored on two Lady Tiger errors while Dunkleman and Wortham both reached base. After Cooksey drew a walk to load the bases with one out, Dunkleman and Wortham both came home on two more Mt. Pleasant errors to stretch CHS' lead to 9-0. Rogers then laced a two-run double into the right centerfield gap to cap Cornersville's 11-0 victory.
