The Cornersville Lady Bulldogs (4-4) snapped a two-game losing streak on Monday night by going on the road and thrashing the Columbia Central Lady Lions 20-10 in five innings.

Cornersville swung hot bats the entire night and built an 18-2 lead through the first three and a half innings of play before cruising to the mercy rule shortened victory.

Having scored a total of four runs in their previous two games, the Lady Bulldogs broke out of their recent offensive slump in a big way and pounded out 19 hits against two Columbia pitchers to go along with 13 walks and a hit batsman.

Lead hitter

Makayla Campbell spearheaded Cornersville's offensive attack by going 4-for-5 with two doubles, a RBI, and four runs scored, while Ashley Beard went 2-for-4 with a homerun and a career high 6 RBI. Starting pitcher Taylor Wolaver and Miranda Cooksey also tallied three hits apiece with Wolaver driving in three runs. Kaitlyn Rogers (2 RBI) and MandiLynn Calahan (1 RBI) notched two hits apiece for the Lady Bulldogs as well, while Carson Coble (2 RBI), Kelsey Wortham (2 RBI), and Breanne Dunkleman all had one hit.

Wolaver went the distance in the circle for Cornersville to pick up her fourth win of the year and yielded 14 hits and two walks in five innings of work.

Imani Carter (4 RBI), Dareain Baker (3 RBI), Kendrica Pillow, and Takoya Lyles registered two hits apiece to pace the Lady Lions at the plate.

Cornersville jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning thanks to a sacrifice fly by Rogers and a Wolaver two-run double before Columbia scored two runs in the bottom half of the frame on RBI singles by Madison Vanderburg and Destinei Martin to cut the deficit to 3-2.

Six-run splurge

The Lady Bulldogs then broke the game open in the top of the second by crossing home plate six times in the frame behind a pair of RBI singles from Calahan and Campbell, a Rogers two-run double, a wild pitch, and a bases loaded walk by Wortham to open up a 9-2 advantage.

Cornersville then stretched their lead to 14-2 in the third inning on the strength of a Coble two-run double and a three-run homer by Beard, before crossing home plate four more times in the top of the fourth with the help of a Wolaver RBI single and bases loaded walks from Beard, Briley Bean, and Wortham to forge an 18-2 advantage.

After the Lady Lions scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth to narrow the gap to 18-7, the Lady Bulldogs extended their lead to 20-7 in the top of the fifth on a two-run single by Beard.

Columbia sliced the deficit to 20-10 with two outs in the bottom of the fifth on a three-run double by Carter, but Wolaver retired the next Lady Lion batter on a groundout to keep the mercy rule intact.
