The Cornersville Lady Bulldogs turned in their best performance of the season Friday night at home versus Mt. Pleasant.

Coming in to the 2020-2011 season, the Lady Bulldogs had won seven in a row and nine out of the last 10 games over Mt. Pleasant, who broke the losing streak with a six-point win in a Hall of Champions game earlier this season.

On Friday night, the Lady Tigers completed the season series sweep with a wild 53-51 overtime win on a buzzer beating layup by Addison Workman, who led all scorers in the contest with 14 points.

Emily Crossman was also in double figures with 12 points, Kenzie Gray netted eight, Kielee Bradley had seven, Ayanna Jones six, Maggie Simpson added three, Baleigh Gray had two, and Kiyanna Armstrong had one point for Mt. Pleasant.

Abbie Woodard led a balanced Cornersville scoring attack with 10 points, Lexie Warren scored eight, Gracie Turner and Jayli Childress had seven points apiece, Grayson Riner and Annabelle Mulliniks netted six points apiece, Meri Hannah Walker had five, and Katie Powers added two points.

Both teams spent a lot of time at the free throw line with Cornersville making 23-of-32 (72%) free throws while Mt. Pleasant made 13-of-25 (52%) charity shots.

The Lady Bulldogs got off to a nice start on a pair of Riner buckets and led 5-3 before Mt. Pleasant scored five and gave up one point the remainder of the first quarter for a 10-6 lead.

The Lady Bulldogs made a big push to start the second period, taking a 14-10 lead with an 8-0 run on baskets by Woodard, Walker, Turner, and Powers.

Mt. Pleasant came back to match the Cornersville run as Workman scored six out of the last eight points in the second quarter to give the Lady Tigers an 18-14 halftime lead.

The Lady Bulldogs managed to cut the lead to one point early in the third quarter before a 3-pointer by Simpson made it a four-point once again, but Cornersville dug in with defense and hard work in the paint.

Woodard was fouled in the low post and made both charity shots to cut the lead back to two points and a steal by Childress led to a pair of made free throws, tying the game at 25 with 2:57 remaining in the third period.

After a Mt. Pleasant missed shot, Woodard went to work in the paint again, converting a three-point play the old-fashioned way to put the Lady Bulldogs up by three points.

Jones scored on a layup for the Lady Tigers and Riner matched the bucket for Cornersville.

Mt. Pleasant could not convert at the other end and the third period ended on another Woodard bucket and free throw to give the hometown girls a 33-27 lead, entering the fourth quarter.

Cornersville went on to build a huge 14-point lead to start the fourth quarter without making a field goal as Childress canned three and Warren nailed five charity shots for a 41-27 lead with 6:10 remaining in the contest.

The Lady Tigers went on an 8-0 run to cut the lead to six points before Mulliniks answered with the Lady Bulldogs’ first 3-pointer of the game.

Mt. Pleasant called timeout with 3:10 remaining in the contest turned up the heat with a 9-0 run, tying the game at 44-44 on two Kenzie Gray free throws with 31.3 seconds left in regulation.

The Lady Bulldogs turned the ball over and Mt. Pleasant made them pay on a Workman bucket.

Things looked bleak for the Lady Bulldogs after two missed free throws, but they got new life when the Lady Tigers coughed the ball up and Warren drilled two foul shots under pressure with 6.3 seconds left in regulation to tie the game.

Mt. Pleasant could not get a shot off before the buzzer and the game went to overtime, tied at 46.

The Lady Tigers scored the first three points in overtime before Cornersville finally got on the board via a Mulliniks 3-pointer to tie the game at 49-49.

The contest went in to the final minute when Baleigh Gray scored for Mt. Pleasant before Walker went to the free throw line with 12.9 seconds left and calmly canned two free throws to knot the contest once again.

The Lady Tigers brought the ball past midcourt and called timeout with 3.2 seconds remaining in the game and they executed perfectly out of the stoppage when Workman took the pass from the far sideline and raced in for the game winning layup and keep the Lady Bulldogs winless on the season.

Cornersville has five games remaining before Christmas, including contests versus Murfreesboro Central Magnet and the Marshall County Tigerettes at the Lewisburg Christmas Classic on December 21 and 22 at the Dottie Kelso Memorial Gymnasium in Lewisburg.
