With their offense sputtering for most of the evening, the Cornersville Lady Bulldogs (2-0) had to rely on their defense to grind out a victory on Monday night, as they defeated the Eagleville Lady Eagles 40-36 at home.
The Lady Bulldogs held a 14-12 lead at the end of the first half prior to opening up a 32-24 advantage midway through the fourth quarter. Cornersville then had to stave off a frantic rally by Eagleville (1-2) that saw the Lady Eagles pull within one point in the final minute of the contest before escaping with the four-point victory.
Despite hitting 6-of-13 field goal attempts in the third quarter, the Lady Bulldogs shot only 32 percent from the floor overall (13-of-41), which included 2-of-9 effort from three-point range, while committing 23 turnovers.
'Too fast'
"Eagleville was just running man-to-man defense against us. We were trying to play to fast. We just need to slow down and make the right pass," said CHS coach Peyton Newton.
Center Ashley Umbles recorded a double-double and led Cornersville with 11 points, 14 rebounds, and two blocked shots. Breanne Dunkleman followed Umbles with eight points and seven rebounds, while Brooke Holt, Haley Stacey, and Kelsey Wortham tallied seven, five, and four points respectively. Britton Stewart and Carson Coble chipped two points apiece for the Lady Bulldogs as well, and Madison Hopkins had one point.
Although the Lady Eagles committed only nine turnovers, Eagleville shot a woeful 20 percent (13-of-64) from the field and made only 2-of-22 attempts from beyond the arc. The Lady Eagles did hold a 18-12 edge on the offensive glass, but Cornersville outrebounded Eagleville 45-34 overall.
Good defense
"We're going to have nights when we score, but defense you can control every night. We still had some mental lapses, but overall I was happy with how we played defensively," said Newton.
Nicole Duke paced the Lady Eagles with 12 points and Allison Lynch notched five points. Kristen Barnes, Chelsea Scott, and Taylor Reed also added four points apiece, while Ali Burns had three points. Shianne Knox and Hannah Cron rounded out the scoring for Eagleville with two points each.
Eagleville inched out to a 3-2 lead midway through the first quarter before Dunkleman converted a three-point play to put the Lady Bulldogs up 5-3.
After the Lady Eagles tallied the next four points to pull ahead 7-5 early in the second period, CHS responded with an 8-1 spurt behind five points from Umbles and a Stacey layup to seize a 13-8 lead.
Staying ahead
Eagleville notched four of the last five points in the second quarter to narrow the gap to 14-12 at halftime, but Cornersville opened the third period with a 10-4 run, highlighted by a Stacey trey, to open up a 24-16 advantage.
The Lady Eagles rattled off six straight points to slice the deficit to 24-22 late in the third quarter, before the Lady Bulldogs outscored Eagleville 8-2 over the next five minutes with the help of four free throws and baskets from Dunkleman and Umbles to stretch their lead to 32-24 midway through the fourth period.
After the Lady Eagles put together a 12-5 run to slice the deficit to 37-36 with :57 left, Hopkins hit one-of-two foul shots to stake CHS to a 38-36 advantage.
Cornersville then held Eagleville scoreless on their final two possessions, while Holt made two free throws to seal the Lady Bulldogs 40-36 triumph.
