CORNERSVILLE — After Marshall County claimed an 8-6 win on its home field against Cornersville earlier this month, it was the Lady ‘Dawgs time for a bit of payback on Tuesday night with a 7-6 win over the Tigerettes.
A five-run third inning by Cornersville ultimately proved to be the difference for the Lady ‘Dawgs, although Marshall County did produce a late-game surge with a four-spot in the fifth frame.
The Lady ‘Dawgs grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a two RBI double by Emma Ward.
Marshall County answered with a sac-fly RBI by Kinley Wiser in the second and a Kori Lyttle RBI in the third.
Ward struck again in the third for Cornersville by mashing a two RBI single to left and then two batters later, Kate Lemon crushed a three-run blast to center field to blow the game wide open.
Even with the 7-2 lead, Marshall County was nearly able to tie the game in the fifth.
Brittany Lynch safely reached base on a Cornersville error and Mallory Woodward scored.
Lyttle then hammered a line drive to center field and knocked in another run before Haylee Hobby added to the inning with a RBI single to left.
Lyttle and Hobby led the way for the Tigerettes with a pair of base hits, while Ward was the offensive hero for the Lady ‘Dawgs, going 2-for-3 with a double and four RBIs.
Carmen Ward got the start and the win from the pitcher’s circle for the Lady ‘Dawgs, giving up just two earned runs on seven hits before Jayli Childress took over and pitched the final two innings in relief.
Hobbt went 2 2/3 innings in the circle before Courtney Lycnh pitched the final 3 1/3 innings in relief for the Tigerettes.
