The Forrest Lady Rockets (2-0) got off to a slow start before heating up in the frigid weather Wednesday night, taking down Spring Hill 17-7 in a six-inning run-rule win in Chapel Hill.

"I am proud that they showed some fight, but I wish they could have done it a little sooner," said Forrest head coach Becky Cheatham.

Forrest banged out 15 hits in the contest with Liz Daughrity leading the way at the dish in a 3-5 performance, including three RBIs.

Five-for-five

Freshman Kelsey Darnell reached base all five times up to bat with two hits, a base on balls, one RBI, and four runs scored.

Katie Warrick went 2-4 with three RBIs and picked up the win in the circle for Forrest, tossing five innings before Sara Jordan came on in the sixth to finish up the contest with one scoreless inning.

The Lady Rockets' defense did not help Warrick very much, committing eight errors in the field as six of seven of Spring Hill's runs were unearned.

"It was bad weather out there, it was cold, but you have to find a way to fight through those things and get the job done," said Cheatham. "I am happy we got out with the 'W' and I hope we can take this and build on it tomorrow."

The Lady Raiders were not much better with the stiff leather, committing seven errors in the field.

Early deficit

Spring Hill (2-4) scored two unearned runs in the top of the first inning on two hits and two Forrest errors with Brooke Yokley driving home one run.

Lady Raider hurler Haley Perryman had her way early with Forrest, facing four batters in the bottom of the first, getting out of a bases-loaded two-out jam in the bottom of the second, and Perryman tossed a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the third.

In the top of the fourth, Bailey Loveless banged a leadoff triple and scored two batters later on a fielder's choice RBI by Taylor Blake to make it a 4-0 ballgame.

In the home half of the fourth, Forrest finally got the offense going in a big way, sending 13 batters to plate, while scoring eight runs on five hits, two walks, and three Spring Hill errors.

Big smash

Warrick had the big hit in the inning with a bases-loaded, three-run double down the right field line.

Daughrity came up with two hits in the frame, including an RBI and Kaitlyn Toombs also had an RBI as the Lady Rockets took an 8-4 lead.

In the top of the fifth, the Lady Rockets allowed Spring Hill to get back in the contest with four runs on three hits and five Forrest miscues in the field.

The Lady Rockets redeemed themselves in the home half of the inning as Kiyoko Puca got things going with a one-out slap hit to center.

In to score

Jessica Harmon hit a shot down the first-base line that was misplayed and the ball went all the way to the corner as Puca raced home, making it 9-7.

Warrick followed with a base on balls before Savannah Brothers knocked in Harmon with a base hit.

Jordan followed with a single to left field and Darnell made it an 11-7 game with an RBI base knock.

Two batters later, Mandi Conley drew a bases-loaded RBI walk, making it 12-7 and the final run of the inning was scored on a passed ball.

Jordan came to the circle in the top of the sixth and got out of a two-on one-out jam on a fly ball to Puca in center field and an inning-ending strikeout.

Lady Rockets roll

Puca led off the bottom of the inning with a triple to right/center.

Harmon would score every time she was on base, reaching three times on Spring Hill errors with the latest Lady Raiders' miscue scoring Puca from third to make it 14-7.

Harmon came in when Warrick reached on an error, Brothers followed with a base on balls, and the Lady Rockets had the bases loaded with one out when Darnell stood on first after Spring Hill's seventh error of the ballgame.

Daughrity ended the game when she slammed a two-run double

"Every one of them said they were unhappy with their performance, so we still have a lot of work to do," said

Cheatham. "But, I am happy that they continue to fight."
