The Forrest Lady Rockets wanted a win to clinch the District 9A-AA South title Thursday night versus Community at Chapel Hill, but settled for a tie after leading for the first 60 minutes of the game.
"My heart can't take it, it was nerve wracking, very nerve wracking," Forrest coach Natalie Dennis said. "It was great competition."
The deadlock still gave Forrest the South title over the Viqueens on the first tiebreaker, winning the goals scored differential 25-7.
Middle Tennessee Christian School is third, Huntland fourth and Fayetteville finished in fifth place in the south division.
Hard-fought
Thursday night's game was a bruising battle on the pitch at the Lions Club Memorial Field as both squads played a spirited, clean game.
Ally Amoroso scored from 20 yards for Forrest after Community could not clear the ball out of its defensive zone with 25:34 remaining in the first half.
"We have been working on that and preparing for certain circumstances like that," Dennis said. "Ally is very capable of making that shot, she has done it twice this season."
The Viqueens continually put pressure on the Forrest defense and it looked like they would tie the game, but a late shot careened off the post and the Lady Rockets held on for a 1-0 lead at the half.
Big save
Community really turned up the heat to begin the second half and they almost scored again, but a great save by Forrest keeper Jasmine Runk denied the tie with just over 30 minutes remaining in the contest.
The two squads traded blows over the next 10 minutes until Jordan Huntley got loose on the left wing, sending a perfect crossing pass to Lexie Bennett, who tapped the ball into the net, past a helpless Runk.
"There was nothing that Jasmine could do about that, it was a perfect play," Dennis said. "We just didn't get our defense back in time to make the play."
Both teams would have opportunities to score the go-ahead goal, but Runk and Community goalie Dora Ramos were up to the task, making several key saves each down the stretch.
Busy job
Ramos had 10 saves in the contest for Community, while Runk was even busier, saving 29 Viqueens' shots on goal.
Brynn Colvin, who scored 12 goals in her last two games, was held scoreless by the stingy Community defense.
Lainey Mays and Haley Lowe had three shots on goal, Rickee Gayle Carter had two shots, Emma Strasser had one and Amoroso scored on her only attempt.
Tight race
The District 9A-AA North division race is still undecided with White House High School (12 pts.) and White House Heritage (10) vying for the top spot.
Teams earn zero points for a loss, one point for a tie and three points for a win.
Those two teams will meet on Tuesday at White House Heritage.
Cheatham County is in third place, followed by Sycamore and Harpeth.
