Despite being without the services of leading scorer Leah Hollingsworth, the Lewisburg Middle School Tigerettes (5-5) completed the season sweep of Spring Hill on Thursday night when they defeated the Lady Generals 31-30 at home.
Having lost 31-28 in their previous encounter with LMS on Nov. 4, Spring Hill appeared they might even the score against Lewisburg after taking a 21-13 lead into the break, but the Tigerettes seized the momentum in the second half and rallied to grab a 23-21 advantage early in the fourth quarter.
After Spring Hill pulled back ahead 29-27, LMS tallied the next four points on a pair of baskets by Demariae Ingram to claim a 31-29 lead before hanging on for the one-point victory.
'Tremendous' win
"That was a tremendous win. We talked before the game that everyone needs to step up and produce a little more. That's how you make up the difference and we did that," said Lewisburg coach Chris Coleman. "I certainly expect it to help our confidence. Certain players showed that they can make plays that they hadn't made before."
Aided by a 5-of-8 shooting performance in the fourth quarter, the Tigerettes shot 42 percent (13-of-31) from the field despite hitting only 1-of-7 attempts from three-point range.
Forward Sydne Solomon helped fill the offensive void left by Hollingsworth's absence and led Lewisburg with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Ingram and Alli Hobbs also tallied six points apiece, while Kimberlyn Greer and Taylor Walls chipped in four and three points respectively.
Although Spring Hill committed 15 fewer turnovers (31-16) than Lewisburg and held a 14-6 edge on the offensive glass, the Lady Generals were unable to take advantage of those extra scoring opportunities and shot just 22 percent (11-of-51) from the field, which included a 8-of-20 effort from beyond the arc.
Jordan Brady paced Spring Hill with eight points and Destiny Oden notched six points. Alex Amos and Aria Cole added four points apiece as well, while Gracie Willet and Hayden Brunt both had three points. Layne Andrews rounded out the scoring for the Lady Generals with two points.
First-quarter run
Spring Hill jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, but the Tigerettes put together an 11-3 run with the help of six points from Hobbs and a Walls trey to pull ahead 11-7 midway through the first quarter.
The Lady Generals rattled off six straight points to grab a 13-11 advantage early in the second period, before Solomon knocked down a jumper to tie the game at 13-13.
After Spring Hill tallied eight of the final nine points of the second quarter to take a 21-14 lead into the break, Lewisburg opened the second half with a 9-0 spurt behind seven points from Solomon to seize a 23-21 advantage early in the fourth period.
Spring Hill outscored LMS 8-4 over the next 3:30 to claim a 29-27 lead before Ingram hit a couple of short jumpers to put the Tigers up 31-29 with :35 left.
Willet then hit a free throw to slice the deficit to 31-30 with 27.8 seconds left, but the Lady Generals were called for a lane violation on her next attempt and the second foul shot was disallowed.
After the Tigerettes were unable to convert the front end of a one-and-one, Spring Hill missed four shots on their final possession before Solomon finally grabbed the defensive rebound as time expired to seal the LMS win.
