Meridianville completed the season sweep of the Lewisburg Middle School Tigerettes (4-5) on Tuesday night, as the Lady Eagles defeated LMS 35-10 at Shelton Gymnasium.

After losing to Meridianville in their previous encounter on Nov. 12, the Tigers (5-4) managed to earn a split in the season series with the Eagles when they pulled out a dramatic 52-49 overtime victory in the second game of the evening.

Tigerettes

Things got ugly for the Tigerettes early, as the Lady Eagles flew out to a 16-2 lead in the first quarter before outscoring Lewisburg 6-2 in the second period to open up a 22-4 advantage at the break.

Meridianville then extended their lead to 26-7 in the third quarter prior to putting together a 9-3 run in the fourth period to cap their 25-point win.

Taylor Walls led LMS with three points, while leading scorer Leah Hollingsworth was held to a season low two points by the Lady Eagles. Alli Hobbs and Kimberlyn Greer chipped in two points apiece for the Tigerettes as well, and Sydne Solomon had one point.

"They did a good job of taking Leah out of the game. We had some other kids get open shots as a result, but we just couldn't get any shots to drop," said Lewisburg coach Chris Coleman. "They jumped on us early and grabbed the momentum. We played better in the second half, but we have to play with that kind of effort all the time."

Dimayia Calvert paced Meridianville with 16 points, while Destiny Cross and T.K. Grandberry notched nine and four points respectively.

Tigers

In the nightcap, the Tigers got off to a roaring start and built a 14-5 lead in the first quarter behind eight points from Caleb Fields and six points from K.J. Johnson.

Lewisburg outscored the Eagles 12-7 in the second period with the help of five points apiece from Fields and Wesley Walker to open up a 26-12 cushion, but Meridianville put together an 11-4 run in the third quarter to narrow the gap to 30-23.

The Eagles then closed the gap to 41-38 late in the fourth period before Meridianville's Isaiah Magwood drained a long three-pointer in the waning moments of regulation to send the game into overtime tied at 41-41.

The Tigers, though, regained their composure in the extra session and outscored the Eagles 11-8 in the overtime period on the strength of eight points from Fields to claim the hard fought 52-49 victory.

Team effort

"I was very pleased that we were able to win this game because the kids showed toughness and the heart to bounce back and play team basketball," said Lewisburg coach David Lovell. "I was concerned going into the overtime because they had the momentum and our guys were a little tired. I was wondering if our guys could dig down deep and pull out the win and they did it."

Fields led LMS' offensive attack by pouring in a career high 28 points, while Johnson tallied 15 points.

"Caleb was unstoppable and got to wherever he wanted to go on the court. He and K.J. carried us," said Lovell.

Walker also added five points and Kamron Liggett-Hightower had two points. Jaleel Howard and Keshun Gentry rounded out the scoring for the Tigers with one point apiece.
