After losing by one-point to Fayetteville Middle School in their previous two meetings, the Lewisburg Middle School Tigerettes suffered another heartbreaking loss to FMS on Monday night when they dropped a 18-17 decision on the road.

The Tigers, meanwhile, completed the season sweep of Fayetteville by whipping FMS 48-27 in the second game of the evening.

Fayetteville got off to a fast start in the girls game and raced out to an 11-4 lead in the first quarter with the help of seven points from D.J. Horton.

The Tigerettes then put together a 6-0 run in the second period on the strength of baskets from Leah Hollingsworth, Sydne Solomon, and Demariae Ingram to slice the deficit to 11-10 at halftime before FMS outscored Lewisburg 4-2 in the third quarter to open up a 15-12 advantage.

Missed chances

After narrowing the gap to 18-17 late in the fourth quarter thanks to two free throws from Hollingsworth and a Taylor Walls three-pointer, the Tigerettes had a couple of chances to take the lead in the final minute, but missed the front end of a one-and-one and committed a turnover on their last two possessions.

"I thought we played hard and did a lot of good things defensively, but we just couldn't get enough shots to fall," said Lewisburg coach Chris Coleman.

Hollingsworth led the Tigerettes with six points, while Solomon and Walls tallied four and three points respectively. Ingram and Kimberlyn Greer chipped in two points apiece for Lewisburg as well.

Horton paced Fayetteville with 13 points, while Kevondria Carr added five points.

Tigers win

Having defeated Fayetteville handily in each of their last three encounters, the Tigers once again had their way with FMS in Monday's contest and jumped out to a 14-5 lead in the first quarter behind six points from Caleb Fields and four points from K.J. Johnson.

After stretching their lead to 21-11 in the second period with the help of four points from Kamron Liggett-Hightower, Lewisburg engineered a 17-9 run in the third quarter on the stretch of seven points from Fields, five points from Johnson, and a Jaleel Howard trey to forge a 38-20 advantage.

The Tigers then outscored Fayetteville 10-7 in the fourth period thanks to baskets from Liggett-Hightower, Fields, Johnson, Tavi McLean, and Hunter Huarez to cap their 48-27 victory.

"I thought we played well," said Lewisburg coach David Lovell. "We played good defense and got out in transition and ran the court. We played hard tonight."

Triple threat

Fields led three Tiger players in double figures with 16 points. Johnson followed Fields with 13 points and Liggett-Hightower finished with a career high 10 points. Howard chipped in three points for Lewisburg as well, while Wesley Walker, McLean, and Huarez had two points apiece.

"It's always better to have three guys in double figures because it makes us harder to guard," said Lovell. "Kamron is getting better every game. He's been rebounding well, but he's picked up his scoring and is starting to put it together."

Brandon Moore paced Fayetteville with nine points, while Isaiah Watkins tallied six points. Desaiah Smith, Zorian Pullen, and Charvez Williams rounded out the scoring for FMS with five, three, and two points respectively.
