A Lewisburg man was killed as a result of a wreck on Mooresville Highway about 3:30 p.m. Monday.

Richard Keith Wiles, 46, of Fairlane Drive, was unresponsive at the scene, said Lewisburg Police Officer John Christmas, and was pronounced dead at Marshall Medical Center.

According to witnesses, Christmas said, Wiles was southbound on Old Columbia Road in a 2003 Mercury Mountaineer, traveling at 50 to 60 miles an hour on the wrong side of the road.

"He never changed direction or hit the brakes," Christmas said.

Wiles' SUV went across Mooresville Highway and struck a 2011 Nissan Rogue driven by Gretchen Curley, 38, of Chapel Hill. Both vehicles rolled over and left the roadway. Wiles' Mercury traveled 160 feet and finally came to rest near Parkwest Townhouse Apartments.

Curley was transported to Marshall Medical Center, treated, and released. A young girl with her was not injured.

Traffic was tied up on the west side of town for at least 90 minutes, Christmas said.

Tennessee Highway Patrol Trooper Ryan Hill assisted Christmas at the scene of the accident, and Marshall County Emergency Medical Service and Lewisburg Fire Department also responded.

Christmas could not explain Wiles' behavior.

"Maybe something happened before the accident," he said.

Wiles was a 1986 graduate of Marshall County High School, and was a familiar figure at local ballparks. His nickname was Killer.

"Killer's going to be missed by a lot of people," said Tribune sports writer Anthony Puca. "He was always a positive person, and very supportive of sports in this county, especially his beloved Tigers."

London Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements for Wiles' funeral. For updated information about the visitation and funeral, please visit www.londonfuneralhomes.com or www.marshalltribune.com.
