A Lewisburg man who pleaded guilty to two counts of rape was sentenced to 20 years in prison last week.
Robert Jason Burgess, 35, of East Commerce Street, was also indicted on drug charges. Circuit Court Judge Robert Crigler sentenced him to three years each on two charges of sale of Lortabs, and a fine of $4,000. Burgess is to serve 30 percent of 6 years, or almost 22 months, before being eligible for parole.
However, this sentence is to be served after the 20 years imposed on the rape charges, so Burgess will not be free until some time in 2031. Burgess was represented by attorney John Norton of Shelbyville. The charges in Burgess' original indictment included eight counts of rape, sexual battery by an authority figure, and sexual exploitation of a minor by electronic means. These all related to events between Sept. 1 and Dec. 15, 2009. Burgess was released on $36,000 bond when he was arrested on the drug charges, after two sales of Lortabs to an agent of the 17th Judicial District Drug Task Force.
