The 13-15 year old Babe Ruth League Eastern Division title game came down to a rematch of the winner’s bracket final as Marshall County squared off with host Lawrenceburg in Sunday’s second game.
Marshall County needed to beat Lawrenceburg twice to snatch the trophy, but it was one and done as the purple and yellow clad hosts came away with a 7-4 win to break a two-year run by the visitors.
The Marshall County defense was stout throughout the tournament, but not in the title game as they committed six errors in the field.
Trey Warner started on the mound for Marshall County and pitched a whale of game, going five solid innings.
Warner gave up five runs (zero earned) on three hits while striking out one and walking three Lawrenceburg batters.
Marshall County only managed four hits in the contest with Daniel Sellars, John Morgan Thomas, Balin Luttrell, and Riley Durbin all coming up with one base knock apiece.
Marshall County opened up the game by scoring two first inning runs as Sellars reached on a one-out error and Carson Cheek followed with a walk before Thomas cleared the bases with a double in to the right/center field gap.
The fielding woes gave Lawrenceburg the tying runs in the bottom of the first inning on a pair of errors, two base hits, and a sac fly RBI by Carter Smith.
A Luttrell one-out single in the top of the second inning was erased when he was caught trying to steal second and Lawrenceburg made it a 3-2 contest in the home half of the frame on a bad break on a ball that hit the umpire that was followed by a run scoring, throwing error.
Lawrenceburg starting pitcher Kade Shultz set down Marshall 1-2-3 in the top of the third inning and Warner worked his way out of a bases loaded two-out jam in the home half of the stanza when Kyrklin Wunderlin grabbed a ground ball behind third base and dove on the bag to end the inning.
Shultz held firm again and Brady McClain reached on a leadoff error in the bottom of the inning and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Avery Tidwell.
Grant Jones slashed a base hit for the unearned run and Shultz retired Marshall County 1-2-3 in the top of the fifth inning.
Another error led to another run in the bottom of the fifth as Lawrenceburg increased its lead to 5-2.
The bats remained cold for Marshall County in the top of the sixth inning and Lawrenceburg scored two more runs off Ashton Grubbs in the bottom of the sixth via RBIs by Shultz and Camden Bosheers.
Mike Mills’ squad had no quit in them as Riley Durbin led off the top of the seventh with a base hit.
Shultz reached his maximum pitch count and had to leave the game in favor of reliever Luke Nichols.
Shane Hay reached on an error to put runners on first and third.
Thomas Beech grounded a ball to third for a force out, but the throw trying to complete a double play at second sailed in to the outfield and Hay came around to score.
An unassisted tag out by the Lawrenceburg first baseman made it two down, but Warner drew a walk to extend the game.
Sellars followed with an RBI single to make it 7-4 and bring the tying run to the plate, but a game-ending strikeout halted the rally and Lawrenceburg was state champs.
The two squads will see each other again in the Southeast Region Tournament at the Jonathan D. Hollingsworth Memorial Babe Ruth Field in Lewisburg, beginning on Tuesday, July 23.
Defending World Series champions Tallahassee Leon (North Florida champions), Auburndale (South Florida champions), the Mckenzie Rebels (Western Tennessee champions), Arlington (Virginia), Greenville (North Carolina Eastern), and the Southwest Athletics (North Carolina Western) round out the eight-team field.
