FRANKLIN — Forrest’s Seth McCoy had quite the run in the TSSAA Class A state wrestling tournament last week.
McCoy, a junior from Forrest High School, blazed through the 152-pound Class A bracket and was set on a collision course with defending state champion Colin Dupill of Greenville in the state championship match.
Dupill reached the championship match in dominating fashion, recording a pin and two technical falls before meeting McCoy, who also reached the 152-pound finals in a dominant fashion.
McCoy began his trek in the state tournament, pinning David Crockett’s Dezsel Rambaad in 33 seconds in his first match of the tournament.
He followed with a second win via pin, beating Munford sophomore Quenston Davis in 4:53.
Having reached the semifinals, McCoy reached the championship round with another pin, beating Signal Mountain’s Jackson Davis in 1:06.
The 152-pound class put an immoveable object on course against an unstoppable force between Dupill and McCoy.
In the end, it was Dupill who defended his title and claimed a hard-fought 12-4 decision to win the division, with McCoy finishing second in the division.
McCoy wasn’t the only representative from Forrest High School, though.
Lady Rocket Danika Mealer had a strong showing in her TSSAA Class A state girls’ tournament debut as well.
She opened the tournament by pinning Emman Henson of William Blount in 1:28 in her opening match, but fell in a 9-3 decision to sixth-place finisher in the 185-pound division to Audra Buckley in her second match.
Mealer responded in the consolation bracket, beating Mt. Juliet’s Abigail Griffin in a 10-5 decision before her run in the tournament came to an end in her second consolation bracket match.
Cornersville High School also made a little history in the tournament with the first appearance by a Bulldog wrestler since the program’s restart last season.
J.P. Bennett, a sophomore, qualified in the 106-pound division, but was edged in a 9-8 decision in his first match by Millington Central’s Derrick Bolden.
His tournament came to an end in the consolation bracket after being pinned by Tanner Kitts in 2:05 in his second match.
