CHAPEL HILL — The degree of separation between backyard rivals Community and Forrest has closed over the last two seasons.
While Forrest has owned the series for decades, Community struck the Lady Rockets with their first win over Forrest in years during their first meeting with a walk-off stunner.
Last week, Forrest got its payback against Community with a gem from pitcher Taylor Moreland in a 1-0 district win.
Moreland pitched a complete game shutout and gave up seven hits, none of which were for extra bases, and struck out two.
Her Viqueen counterpart Annie Prince also tossed a stellar game, going the distance and giving up one unearned run on seven hits.
A pair of Viqueen errors facilitated the game’s only run in the bottom of the second inning.
Abby Ferguson safely reached via error and Moreland laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Ferguson into scoring position.
But a second Viqueen error on a throw to third base allowed Ferguson to scamper home for the only score of the game.
Both teams connected on seven hits, with Jenna Goodman going 2-for-3 with a double.
